Why You Should Put This New Local Salon On Your Radar

The show must go on. And we’re glad to see salons (safely) busy as we try to get back some of what we lost this year, on a surface level at least. From maintenance hair colouring to more mundane grooming, we’re glad to be back – in 2020, even getting a bikini wax feels like a bit of an outing.

Sugaring is a great natural option for hair removal (head to the lovely Michele at Sugar Bare on Leopardstown Road, www.sugarbare.ie, to try it – you’ll be an instant convert). But if you’d rather do waxing, the newest spot is Wax in the City, now open in Stillorgan – it’s next to that area’s most famous landmark, Nimble Fingers, where Joseph Kramer hair used to be. It’s alarmingly bright on the outside and pristinely clean, colourful and shiny on the inside; you may have visited the one on South William Street. Plus there’s free parking across the road, if you can get a spot.

As for the service, I’d forgotten quite how good Wax in the City is. Its USP? German precision brought to the waxing world (it’s a German company). So you can just walk in – no appointment necessary. I love this idea – use their App to make the process even smoother. When I visited, therapist Leticia was excellent, friendly, speedy and skilled. She is also the only therapist in years to advise taking a sharp breath in through your nose as the wax strip comes off – the best advice you can be given for waxing, as it distracts from any discomfort. I was taught it by Otylia Roberts, who introduced the Brazilian wax to the UK in the 1980s; she used to work from the basement of Hershesons salon in London and, as an ex-nurse, sternly instructed her clients to use that technique – and it works.

The WITC salons now use a vegan wax that’s gentler on the skin. There’s been big demand for Hollywood and Brazilian waxes since lockdown, Leticia tells me, and they are also seeing more male clients too – surprisingly, perhaps, not only younger guys. Anyway this is a handy and trusty spot and one to trust your legs or nether regions to if you’re so inclined. Prices go from €24 basic bikini to around €40. wax-in-the-city.com
