Why We’re Wearing Skin-Tone Lipsticks For Autumn

This Tone-On-Tone mood has us falling for nudes all over again after a summer of brights – here’s what’s new from Chanel this season …

Chanel’s autumn collection features a range of lipsticks in skin-tone colours – on paper, the line-up looks more like a collection of foundations, from soft lip-pink to rich ebonys and plums. They are deliciously natural-looking, with a creamy texture (less drying than the Tilburys). €42 at counters nationwide.

There’s a Tone-On-Tone nail collection to match, a range of soft lattes, caramels and rosewoods from pale sandy pink Harmonie to dark chocolate browns that tip into aubergine.

I never go in for the whole “it’s autumn, let’s wear brown clothes” – brown is forever stuck in the seventies to me, and always speaks of corduroy, rollnecks and slacks. But shades of coffee and cream will always seem delicious in make-up – and these have such a mellow tone and feel sophisticated and subtle.

The colours remind us of the shapewear ranges (like Skims) that now fill shop floors with every shade of beige, rich brown and pale pink. It’s all in tune with the subtle, classic fashion for autumn, and this Tone-On-Tone mood has us falling for nudes all over again after a summer of brights.
