Why Hot Reds Are Right For Now

Let’s not tiptoe into this year. When the going gets tough, bright colours can help give us a lift. Try to resist the temptation to hide away in shades of grey, and instead embrace the red of boxing gloves, scarlet poppies, Marilyn Monroe’s lips. “For spring/summer, we’ll be seeing bright colours for sure,” says Bobbi Brown Pro Artist Hollie Ellis. “Whether it’s a focus on the eyes or the lips, bold or a soft stain, it’s a look to stand out in a crowd. People are craving escapism, glamour and beauty so I think that will filter into trends we see across the catwalk, runways and red carpets.” We’re definitely not going gently into 2021 …

Chanel’s Rouge Allure Laque have names like Invincible, Tenancious and Timeless. And boy are they feisty! They’re all about dressing up, yet have a practical side as well as high glamour – once on they really do not shift, which is just what we need now with mask-wearing. Full, no compromise colour and shine, minus any lip-shrivelling drying texture. Nothing is going to stop us enjoying lip colour, and these are the answer. €36 each, from January 15. Or simply go bright on your nails with Metallic Bloom (€25) from the SS21 Les Fleurs de Chanel collection, as shiny and fun as high gloss sweet wrappers.

Shiseido’s Lip Liner Ink Duo is a two in one tool for helping to make your lip colour last: you get primer and liner in one neat stick. The super-light formula is suited for both lining and filling the lip, says James Boehmer, Global Artistic Director for Shiseido Makeup. “Just as you would use primer on a canvas or wall before you paint, this duo optimizes the surface of the lips for a richer, more saturated result,” says Boehmer. Try also the Modern Matte lip colour in Shock Wave (€30.49 at Arnotts) for an impact – tap on for a lip stain effect.

I agree with Hollie Ellis that lip stains will be popular in 2021. “Stained lips are perfect for everyday life. Less maintenance! Use a balm in the morning to really moisturise the lips. Grab your lipstick – a bold, matte, anything – and use your fingertip to take from the product and press onto the lips. Take a tiny amount from your lips and press onto the cheeks for a flattering cheek and lip combination.” Try Bobbi Brown Crushed Lip Colour in Sunset (€28).

Jo Malone London continues its run of imaginary scents inspired by flowers and plants that have no scent in real life (barley, silver birch) with their January launch, Scarlet Poppy Cologne Intense. It follows in the footsteps of Kenzo Flower, who created an imaginary rose-based smell for the bright red poppy. I haven’t smelt Scarlet Poppy yet but the red bottle is certainly striking and it’s said to be a big floral with notes of iris, barley and tonka bean plus a fig accord – expect something rich and on the sweeter side. From €101, from January.
