It’s Not How Old, But How You Are Old That Matters

Penny McCormick finds there’s a correlation between beauty and busyness when it comes to ageing well

“I once heard someone say, ‘I shall die very young. How young? I don’t know. Maybe 70, maybe 80, maybe 90. But I shall be very young,” so said the venerable fashion editor Diana Vreeland who, over 50 years before Emile Ratelband was making headlines about self-identification, was defining the difference between getting old and ageing.

Emily Ratelband, you may recall, is the 69-year-old Dutch motivational speaker and positivity coach, who fought (and lost) to legally change his age so that he might fare better on the dating scene. “Self-identifying” as 49, Ratelband is undiminished and has vowed to appeal the judgement. There is no word yet on his success with finding a partner.

But I digress. Many of my own muses, including actress Diane Keaton, 72, beauty entrepreneur Olivia Chantecaille, 72, and editor and writer Diane Althill, 101, are proof of the adage it’s not how old, but how you are old that matters.

So which celebrities are ageing naturally and which are reaching for the Botox? Find out below.
