Where to Go For a Spur of the Moment Meal

Sadly, planning an outing in a post-lockdown world is not as simple and straightforward as it once was. Between reserving pre-dinner drinks and restaurant reservations, a night out has morphed into something that takes military level planning. Happily, there are still some excellent restaurants taking walk ins and we have compiled a go-to list for those who like to live on the edge.

Hawker @ Hang Dai Chinese

Hong Kong style street food by way of Dublin? Yes please. If past experience of the food at Hang Dai is anything to go by, Hawker is bound to be the al fresco dining experience of the summer. While the rooftop Gold Bar is accepting reservations, Hawker is strictly walk in only, in keeping with the street food theme. You may have to wait, but we are convinced it will be worth it. www.hangdaichinese.com

Tang

Tang is the place to go in the city for casual Middle Eastern style food, and brunch at Tang has an understandably loyal following. The cinnamon buns would tempt even the most carb adverse and if you happen to be organised, order one of their weekend dinner boxes to take home with you and keep the theme going over the weekend. At the very least, pick up a jar of their Nut Butter. www.tang.ie

Le Perroquet

Open for both lunch and dinner, Tuesday to Saturday, for walk ins only, Le Perroquet is a small slice of Parisian perfection on Leeson Street. Starters include dishes such as confit chicken leg croquette with mushroom? purée, romaine lettuce, crispy bacon with avocado and anchovy dressing and we suggest you do as the French do, add wine and cancel the rest of your afternoon plans. www.leperroquet.ie

3 Leaves

Securing a table at 3 Leaves is something of a feat given how limited they are but it is always worth the risk. With a no reservations policy, tables are always in high demand with the lunchtime Thali offering being as popular as ever. Husband and wife team Chef Santosh and Milie have changed the perception of Indian food since opening 3 Leaves with their light, fragrant yet substantial dishes that manage to satisfy a hearty appetite without inducing an afternoon siesta, as Indian food can so often do. www.3leaves.ie

Balfes at The Westbury

With one of the nicest terraces in Dublin, Balfes are back with an all-day menu and a weekend brunch menu along with a selection of cocktails and drinks. Gambas, tuna tartare and grazing boards all feature alongside more substantial dishes such as lobster and prawn tagliolini with roasted cherry tomatoes and confit garlic. Ice cream for dessert is from Scúp Gelato in Wexford, a family run business churning out wonderful gelato since 2014. Elderflower sorbet sounds about as summery as it gets. www.balfes.ie

Brother Hubbard North

With street side seating on Capel Street just launched and kept exclusively for walk ins, Brother Hubbard could be a safe bet should you find yourself with a sudden hankering for an octopus, chorizo and chickpea stew or something along those lines. The food is fresh, vibrant and delicious and as far as we’re concerned, halloumi fries with chilli honey are always a good idea, whatever the weather. www.brotherhubbard.ie
