The new novel from one of Ireland’s finest writers is published this summer – here’s where to see him talk about it …
I’ve loved Donal Ryan’s writing since his debut novel, The Spinning Heart, which was nominated for the Booker Prize in 2013, as was his fourth novel, From A Low and Quiet Sea, in 2018. He’s had seven number one bestselling novels. And he’s set to have an eighth, when Where are the kings lands on August 13. It’s one of our novels of the year.
Ryan, from Nenagh, Co Tipperary, writes quietly devastating novels that resonate with a dark beauty, and Kings … (the title comes from a WB Yeats poem) lives up to his stellar reputation. It tells the story of Jack from the age of 12 as he faces tragedy and has to adjust to an entirely new life. Told in often breathless prose, capturing the pattern of a young boy’s thoughts, it has a rhythmic, poetic brilliance and great empathy – signatures of Ryan’s writing. The portrayal of Jack’s adoptive family is cinematic, vivid and moving.

Hear Donal discuss the background, themes and inspiration behind his long-awaited new book, with literary journalist Alex Clark, followed by an audience Q&A and book signing.
