Glossy Ideas for The Bank Holiday Weekend

From parades and festivals to exhibitions, museums and afternoon tea, here’s how to spend St Patrick’s Day weekend …

After two years of online events, St Patrick’s Festival in Dublin promises to celebrate what it means to be truly Irish in considerable style this year. American Irish actor John C Reilly is guest of honour at this year’s parade which returns to Dublin from 12 noon on Thursday, winding its way from Parnell Square to Kevin Street, Dublin 2. For those who can’t attend in person, the Parade will be broadcast live on RTÉ One and globally available on the RTÉ Player. New to the 2022 festivities is Festival Quarter at the National Museum of Ireland, Collins Barracks, which will be home to a day-to-night urban Festival from March 16 to 20. One of the events taking place at the Festival Quarter is that hosted by The Irish Food Writers Awards together with the National Dairy Council entitled “Is there an Irish cuisine?” Taking place at midday on Saturday, March 19 a panel, chaired by broadcaster Suzanne Campbell, will debate this question. Participants include chef Damien Grey from Liath restaurant in Blackrock, Dublin and Jess Murphy a chef food writer and owner of Kai restaurant in Galway. For a family day out

“Connections” is the theme of a full line-up of entertainment which starts at 12 noon until 6pm at Dundrum Town Centre, which can be enjoyed by the whole family. Make sure you bring some dancing shoes! Irish dance troupe Slide Step will perform the evolution of Irish dance and will encourage the audience to participate in an impromptu céilí. From 2pm onwards, the Miss Ali Stage School will be staging a performance of dancing, singing and poetry reading. Don’t miss the new Irish folk bank Ceól, formed by country music singer Nathan Carter. It will perform from 4pm to 6pm, taking inspiration from The Dubliners, The Chieftains, Mumford and Sons, their aim is to bring folk music to a new generation. Dundrum Town Centre will also have some themed face painting taking place at Town Square from 1-4pm. Learn about Irish stories

At EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum there is a special storytelling, singing and folklore event on Sunday, March 19 as well as a St Patrick’s “Treasures and Triumphs” trail running throughout the museum for visitors to enjoy. Do check out the Green Roots Project which is encouraging conversations around sustainability and climate change during this time of celebration of all things Irish and green. Visit Ballyseedy Home & Garden, Co Kerry

If you are spending the long weekend in Tralee, pop into Ballyseedy Home & Garden, where a lively programme of events has been planned. Irish Dance Music group SuperCéilí will give a performance of Irish and modern music and dance, in the Yard. Other pop-ups include arts and pottery workshops with creative Amy Smith, as well as Irish dancing exhibitions by Fearns School of Irish Contemporary Dance. Try this sensory experience

Beginning on March 17, “Of Sand and Soil: A Taste of Ireland” is a Roe & Co experience which includes cocktail making and whiskey tastings at Power House Garden, in the Roe & Co Distillery, 92 James’s Street, Dublin 8. Guests will be greeted with a cocktail upon arrival before a cocktail making masterclass, inspired by the land or the sea, using ingredients such as mushrooms and seaweed. This is followed by a whiskey tasting paired with local artisan bites, such as chocolate and cheese to complement the flavour notes. Visitors will get a chance to try the new Roe & Killahora Curators 0.2 Irish whiskey, with notes of crisp green orchard fruits, and its collaboration partner, the Killahora Orchards’ limited-edition Apple Aperitif with flavours of toffee apple. Guests will finish with finish up with a cocktail in the Power House Bar, taking home a gift of Roe & Co whiskey glasses. Book this Roman feast

The team from Six by Nico Dublin has been unearthing ancient recipes to create a historically adapted menu launching on Wednesday, March 16. “Ancient Rome” is an immersive six course menu available at the buzzy Molesworth Place restaurant, priced at €45 per person. Courses include cacio e peppe, followed by white asparagus, crispy duck egg, hazelnut, and brown butter and roasted Hispi cabbage, cavatelli pasta, pickled Chanterelle mushrooms, truffle foam and pecorino sardo. Apparently, Ancient Romans loved a very sweet dessert, referred to as “mensa secunda”, or “second meal”. As a finale, guests can indulge in honey parfait, ricotta cheese mousse, preserved quince with muscat grape, and honey tuile. Head to Love is a Stranger at The Grainstore, Ballymaloe, Co Cork

The team behind Another Love Story, a weekend festival, has planned a day of music and food, not to mention atmosphere at The Grainstore, Ballymaloe, Co Cork, on Saturday, March 19 as part of its continuing series of day events “Love Is a Stranger”. Starting at 2pm, artists performing include the emerging West Cork duo Les SalAmandas; Irish artists Anna Mieke and Junior Brother and multi-instrumentalist Clare Sands. Throughout the afternoon a series of talks and DJ sets will take place; Siobhan Kane chats to celebrated Cork writer Danny Denton, and there is a question-and-answer session with Paul McDermott on his documentary Fail We May, Sail We Must which investigates the links between Cork and the late, musician Andrew Weatherall. Take in some art

There are plenty of exhibitions on around the country including “Division” by artist Aches (pictured), whose experimental, colourful graffiti style is incorporated onto wood, glass, and canvas at Hang Tough Gallery, Dublin 2; www.hangtough.ie. At Crawford Art Gallery, Cork its new exhibition is “Saturation: the everyday transformed” which explores what Susan Sontag termed “Everyday life apotheosized … the kind of beauty that only the camera reveals”. Visitors can take part in special drawing workshops, bespoke tours, a family trail and enjoy it all as traditional music echoes through the Gallery. On Friday and Saturday (March 18-19) artist Siobhan Catinot is leading a workshop focussing on our connection to nature in the Gallery’s Long Room from 2-4pm. The Home Moment has created a turf scented candle for St Patrick’s Festival (€26), part of a curated capsule collection of St Patrick’s Festival official merch.
