We’re Returning To This Sea-Powered Irish Skincare Star

Seavite has three decades of expertise and two dermatologists behind it …

One of our best homegrown family businesses celebrated 30 years in business last week. Seavite was founded by Patrick Mulrooney in the 1990s. A marine scientist, Mulrooney was looking for solutions to his daughters’ eczema; the family found that their skin was much improved after summers swimming in the sea in the west of Ireland. The Mulrooney daughters both became doctors, specialising in clinical dermatology and have run Seavite since 2015, building on their father’s legacy, along with their own Dr Mulrooney Skin Care Clinic in Dublin.

A private lunch held at beautiful private residence 15 Merrion Square celebrated Kaye Mulrooney’s 80th birthday as well as Seavite’s 30-plus years in business, with guests including Helen McAlinden and Andrea Gilligan. Kaye talked emotionally about taking over the business in 2003, and the adjustment from her previous career as a teacher. Katherine Mulrooney talked through the benefits of Seavite’s formulations, which are especially ideal for those with sensitive skin, as they are gentle, soothing and hydrating. The skincare is all made in Co Galway and combines soothing marine extracts and sustainably sourced seaweed with botanicals, avoiding mineral oils, parabens and skin irritants.

What to take home Seavite also creates haircare, which is well worth trying – you’ll be amazed at how soft your hair feels. Start with the Face Travel Set (€85) to experience the bestselling Super Nutrient Radiance Face Serum and Soothing & Replenishing Face Cream. There are currently some great savings on sets, including the Seavite Nourish & Glow Face Box (€130, down from €180). Don’t miss the softly scented candles, and the Shower Gel, a staple with a hint of sea air.

The lowdown It’s always exciting to discover great new Irish skincare, especially when it’s made here with integrity. But it’s equally important to remember the OGs: those that innovated and were ahead of their time. Seavite was the first to really highlight the benefits of the sea, with a focus on sustainability, as well as sensitive skincare. From beautiful textures to a clinical dermatology background, this is a range worth revisiting. Stocked in pharmacies and health stores nationwide. www.seavite.com
