If a ‘ludicrously capacious’ bag is seen as wrong amongst the upper elite (see Tom Wambsgans’ scathing attack on a Burberry tote in the latest season of Succession) then, quite frankly, we don’t want to be right. We live and die by a large tote – one that you can bring everything you need in. Who has time for a ‘just your keys, card and lipstick’ envelope clutch? Not us, especially as the last few years have brought a more practical ethos to how we dress.
What’s implied in Wambsgans’ put-down is that the flashier the bag, the more nouveau riche the owner. What’s also suggested is that the smaller the carry-all the more old money the wearer – no need to take the kitchen sink on the commute (what even is a commute?) also, there’s no need to carry a pair of flats for the subway. Thankfully spring summer delivers on decidedly roomy bags – great! – and there’s one common denominator: stripes. Large, skinny and definitely multi-coloured, there’s an array of striped carry-alls out there now; from basket bags to canvas totes and beach bags made from jute. This time of the year demands a good handbag. We may take it on a plane, for a trip to the seaside, or carry it from meetings to an al fresco dining spot.
