If you’ve tried anything from the Victoria Beckham Beauty line, you’ll know that its focus is skin science plus luxury. Think elegant, compact, stunningly good eyeliners, subtly flattering lip shades.

And now she’s stepping beyond skincare and make-up with her first concealer, created in collaboration with German skin-wizard Professor Augustinus Bader. “I want to be the best in class,” says Beckham firmly, on a Zoom call. “My dream when it comes to the complexion is to have make-up that conceals and treats at the same time. Having come up with the Priming Moisturiser and the Power Serum together with Professor Bader, this pen concealer is the next step.”

Beckham has long been a fan of a click-pen format (there was a lip gloss in her previous beauty collection with Estée Lauder). The concealer’s format has been carefully considered: the click-pen controls the amount that comes out, while the shape of the brush is perfect for accessing hard to reach areas, such as the inner eye, for precise application, the designer explains. “I obsess over all these little details,” she admits. The brush-pen makes it quick and easy to apply, and gives you the precision to put something where it’s needed.

“The idea is that when you take your make-up off, your skin looks better,” says Beckham. “I could never find a formula that satisfied me, or find a colour that perfectly suited my skin,” she says. “I truly believe this is one of a kind. While testing it, I’ve noticed a big difference in the skin under my eyes – I’m needing to use less concealer under my eyes, which is proof for me that it’s working. Even if I’m having a make-up free day, I will still wear this to treat my skin, but without clogging. Today [on the Zoom call] I’m wearing no foundation. And we worked with make-up artists to make sure that everyone can find their shade.”

It also points towards a foundation next, which Beckham promises is on the way. “We’re just starting our conversation regarding complexion. I want to push boundaries and create what’s not out there already. I’ve used the best make-up products out there and I’m very aware what I can’t get my hands on. And here we have something very unique. We haven’t compromised on either the science of the formula or the make-up aspect.”

Make-up with skincare benefits is not radical in itself. But you have to admire the way Beckham doesn’t pretend to be a skin expert herself, but delegates to the best in the business instead. Bader believes this concealer is “a unique idea and will advance the field. We are leading the conversation with products that make our skin better.” The formula features his proprietary TFC8, patented technology featuring natural amino acids, high-grade vitamins and peptides that is “all about natural skin repair. It’s a toolbox for your skin cells to heal your skin when you have damage. It helps the self-healing process in a totally natural way – it’s an imitation of nature.”

We’ve been trying it out for the past few weeks. And we’ve tried to resist loving it as €75 is a lot to spend on a concealer (2ml). But it is like having skin-coloured Tipp-Ex (if you remember that) at your disposal. It’s incredibly neat to carry with you, and I do think you’ll find you’re using less foundation, since this simply erases any dark/blotchy/red bits of your skin.

Victoria Beckham by Augustinus Bader The Concealer Pen, €75, launches on September 5, www.victoriabeckham.com. Victoria Beckham Beauty opens at Brown Thomas on September 13.
