Remember when eyeshadow palettes were a thing? Those Naked palettes flew off the shelves, with each new iteration driving sales. But it feels like we have become more selective, and careful of waste – eye colour palettes generally contained one or two shades you used all the time, and about twelve others you never touched. And so we’re seeing a return to the single eyeshadow compact, where you choose just one shade you really love.
1. Chanel’s new range of Ombre Essentielle eye colours (€40) features beautifully subtle shades in a new, creamier texture. They range from the palest matte dove-grey to iridescent white, and they make you want to experiment with an adventurous colour such as pistachio green or soft lilac. They glide on easily, and stay in place. We love this look at Chanel’s Cruise 2024 show, created by mixing two shades of Ombre Essentielle, 222 Jade Facetté and 224 Blé d’Or Antique. www.chanel.com
2. Irish-owned Ayu has just launched a new range of individual eye shadows too, with a focus on warmer tones, from copper to cranberry. €12 each, three for €30; at Kildare Village, Mahon Point Shopping Centre, Cork, and www.ayucosmetics.com.
3. If you want to up the ante and wear something with sparkle, consider Irish brand Anam Cosmetics, specialists in sustainable glitter. Made from plant-derived materials, and certified cruelty-free, Anam’s biodegradable glitter is a considered choice. Current shades are Gold, Taupe and Teal (€15.50 each, €27 for a set of two or €40 for all three shades via anamcosmetics.com). They’re not as silky to apply as other eyeshadows, but they are far more planet-friendly.
