This year in the shop we are using lots of elements from the landscape to inspire us for our wreaths, like bog myrtle, rosehips, birch, noble fir moss and holly. I’m hoping to use as much locally grown foliage as possible for our wreaths, with just ten per cent from Holland – it’s something we’ve worked hard on over the last year. I find people really want to bring nature into their homes this year – and less tinsel. For a properly green option, we’ve created a beautiful dried Christmas arrangement of natural elements which is completely compostable. www.shop.thegarden.ie (photographs by Doreen Kilfeather)

For the first time in 15 years, I have bonded with my own home. Since leaving the city I continued to travel to Dublin to work, while my husband and two children moved their lives into the village. I spent 15 years driving back and forth across a mountain. This year when I left my job, the world turned on its axis. I expected to have some time to myself to consider my next move. Needless to say, my daughter returned home to work from home for the lockdown. My son was home from school and my husband works in the office next to our house. I started to relax and totally enjoy my home and my family! There is nothing I love more after a long day than to change into my loungewear, relax on the sofa with a glass of bubbles and the twinkling of the Christmas tree lights. It is my favourite place to unwind. The walls are painted Prosecco by Colourtrend. Very apt!

I have redefined my kitchen space over the Covid period due to so many requests from family and friends asking me for recipes for one person. I was also asked by a friend Joe if I would do an online recipe video in aid of the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre, after doing my first ever video for this series I thought why not combine the two so I redesigned my kitchen and transformed it into a mini film studio which is now permanently set up for online tutorials on cooking for one, tips and tricks and everything in between!

For the first time in 15 years, I have bonded with my own home. Since leaving the city I continued to travel to Dublin to work, while my husband and two children moved their lives into the village. My husband can work from anywhere, my children started in the local schools. I spent 15 years driving back and forth across a mountain. This year when I left my job, the world turned on its axis. I expected to have some time to myself to consider my next move. Needless to say, my daughter (who now lives and works in Dublin) returned home to work from home for the lockdown. My son was home from school and my husband works in the office next to our house. We were all in lockdown together. I started to relax and totally enjoy my home and my family! For the first time in 25 years, I didn’t have to get up before sunrise. I embraced the restrictions and found a new level of freedom in it. I spent my days outside: eating, gardening, upcycling old furniture and every couple of weeks the garden patio became the family barbers. There is nothing I love more after a long day than to change into my loungewear, relax on the sofa with a glass of bubbles and the twinkling of the Christmas tree lights. It is my favourite place to unwind. The walls are painted Prosecco by Colourtrend. Very apt!
