How To Wear The Season’s Biggest Fashion Trends, According To Our Style Editor

White shirt? Tick. Oversized blazer? Tick. Cargo pants? Tick. Aislinn Coffey chooses the best trends of the season and offers advice on how to wear them …

COBALT BLUE

Prepare to see Yves Klein’s highly pigmented blue everywhere. A spike in cyan reflects fashion’s inclination towards more vibrant palettes this year. HOW TO WEAR Head to toe or paired with neutrals like camel, white and tan. Image; Alexander McQueen.

3D FLOWERS

From Loewe’s provocative 3D anthuriums to Roksanda’s twist on pretty fabric roses, make sure your florals are three dimensional this season. HOW TO WEAR On a “going-out top” with jeans; on a dress, with simple accessories. Don’t gild the lily! Image; Roksanda.

WHITE SHIRTS

Utilitarian, effortless, reliable: you can’t go wrong with an oversized white shirt. HOW TO WEAR Paired with jeans and barely there sandals; with a skirt; over a dress. Image; Valentino.

LONG SKIRTS

Expect to see maxis everywhere. HOW TO WEAR With rugby tops for a preppy vibe; with T-shirts over tailored versions; with crop tops to show off yoga-honed abs. Image; Ralph Lauren.

RELAXED TAILORING

This borrowed-from-the boys trend, in muted colour palettes, dominated runways at The Row, Tibi and Edun Choi. HOW TO WEAR Be daring and keep things bare under your blazer (as per Victoria Beckham and Roksanda) or layer with a silky cami. This fuss-free style looks best with thong sandals or chunky platforms. ALL WHITE

Nothing says springtime like all white. Zimmermann, Coperni, Adam Lippes and Chanel left us wanting to wear (pristine) layers of white all week long. HOW TO WEAR Seek out whites with unusual fabrics and textures and wear with minimal silver accessories. Image; Zimmermann.

SUMMER BLACK

Head-to-toe black is the coolest of trends. Summer LBDs with crochet and lace detailing add softness to this often unforgiving shade. HOW TO WEAR Invest in a tailored LBD or looser two-piece. Wear both with classic pumps. Image; Dries Van Noten .

SEQUINS

There was no shortage of shiny embellishments and high-octane sequins on the runways. The daytime glam factor has reached an all-time high. HOW TO WEAR With something simple and modern. Image; Jil Sander.

SHEER JOY

Each designer put their own spin on this sheer, sultry, lingerie-inspired trend. HOW TO WEAR It’s about showing a little, not a lot. Wear a crisp T-shirt under a sheer slip dress or with a sheer-panelled skirt. For a more daring look, show off abs and a simple bra with a see-through top. Image; Tory Burch.

SUPER-SIZED BLAZER

The dream minimalist SS23 wardrobe will include an XL blazer. HOW TO WEAR The trick to styling is the right proportions. Try yours with a mini skirt or leggings and heels or go large with low-slung baggy jeans. Always wear a fitted tee underneath. Image; Blazé Milano.

GRAPHIC EYELINER

In a dream world, we’d wear the graphic streaks of cobalt blue and inky black seen at Dries Van Noten, or Dior’s heavy charcoal-lined look, at all times. A heavily lined eye evokes a punk spirit in tribute to the late, great Vivienne Westwood, too. So arm yourself with a liner and steady your hand! This trend is here to stay. As for the rest of your make-up, keep your base pared-back with just a hint of coverage. Image; Dior.

SLOUCHY JEANS

The new jean style is slouchy, wide-leg, low-slung. Also, look out for the premium denim maxi skirt. HOW TO WEAR With a tucked-in denim shirt, a good belt and some chunky jewellery. Image; Bally.

CARGO PANTS

Ditch your chinos and opt for a pair of multipocket silk raver pants (at Fendi) or cotton drill cargo pants. HOW TO WEAR Steer clear of military hues and choose a pastel palette. Wear with barely there heels or flat sandals. Image; Tibi.

CHOCOLATE LASHES

We’re opening our eyes to a lighter way to wear mascara – brown is a somewhat softer and more relaxed option than black for defined lashes with less drama. Try Tilbury Pillow Talk Push Up Lashes (€24.50 at www.theloop.ie), or Malteser-brown Glossier Lash Slick (€18). Or consider something more daring – Chanel is championing red for eyes and lashes. It’s surprisingly flattering.

LEATHER ALL YEAR

Yes, you can wear leather all year. An elegant light-coloured coat (seen here at Saint Laurent) elevates a plain dress. Cropped leather trousers (in silver at Isabel Marant) or a classic-shaped leather dress (at Chloé) will always have a place in your wardrobe. HOW TO WEAR Keep the total look monochrome and minimal or go for contrast with floaty, feminine tops and dresses. Image; Saint Laurent.

PANNIER POCKETS

Pockets protruded from skirts, coats and trousers like mini bags. We liked Miu Miu’s muted two-piece, above. HOW TO WEAR With something plain and simple on top. And don’t overfill! Image; Miu Miu.

BERRY LIPS

Instead of the usual peach and coral lip shades, spring looks featured darker lip shades. Rochas, David Koma and Molly Goddard paired light summer clothes with luscious blackberry or raspberry lips, set off against bare-looking, polished skin. We love Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet, updated this month with new shades; try deliciously rich Mysterieuse. Image; Chanel.
