WHO Damian Browne, Irish former professional rugby player turned extreme adventurer, peak performance athlete and keynote speaker.
MY STYLE? I have two very distinct styles. Shorts in any weather (yes, I am one of those people) or a nice, considered pair of jeans, and a shirt with smart shoes. I have a love affair with shoes.
THE BEST INVESTMENT PIECE I OWN is a blue handwoven tweed jacket by Magee 1866.
WHAT DO I WEAR ON AND OFF-DUTY? If I’m on an expedition, my clothing is technical and chosen to combat the extreme demands of the environment when high-altitude mountaineering or ocean rowing [Browne rowed from New York to Galway in 2022]. If I am delivering a talk, I wear one of my many pairs of Jeffrey West shoes, a smart pair of chinos or jeans (by Scotch & Soda), a well-fitting shirt, and a classic Magee 1866 tweed jacket.
I MOSTLY PREFER TO SHOP IN INDEPENDENT BOUTIQUES. When you’re six foot five inches and nearly 20 stone, I find it’s sensible to try on clothes before any purchase.
MY SIGNATURE SCENT is Bleu de Chanel eau de toilette by Chanel.
I GET MY HAIR CUT by John McGuire and his team in Fat Tony’s barbershop in Galway.
MY COFFEE ORDER is a double, double espresso, that’s not a misprint!
I UNWIND by walking the dog.
THE GYM is a huge part of my life and wherever I am in the world I try to find a gym to train in daily. I have seen the inside of some, let’s just say, “unique” gyms in Kyrgyzstan and West Papua, to name a couple.
ONE OF MY BEST SPORTING MOMENTS? The feeling in the changing room after beating a star-studded Toulon side while playing with minnows Oyonnax, having been five points down with eight minutes to play, with just 14 men.
MY NEXT ADVENTURE is guiding two groups of intrepid souls up Kilimanjaro this June and July with Earth’s Edge adventure travel company.
