The New Rules For Wearing Suits at Work

As we get older and our bodies begin to change, it can be difficult to adjust your wardrobe as some trends begin to feel out of bounds. Luckily, smart workwear has never been easier to nail as relaxed, easy-to-wear suits are back in fashion. Aislinn Coffey rounds up the new rules for wearing suits now, and where to buy the best …

Just as the nature of power in the modern workplace has changed to a gentler, more emotionally intelligent approach, so too is this season’s power suit a softer incarnation of its waisted, padded-shouldered predecessor. Oversize, easy-to-wear jackets with longer sleeves, loose, cropped trousers and pretty tops and blouses look as good with flats or sneakers as with heels and gently breaking the rules lends a creative edge to your suit. Take inspiration from the runway and find affordable versions on the high street: Ted Baker, Reiss, & Other Stories and Whistles. Look for tweed, wool or wool mix and a good lining. Remember, grey looks good on everyone. Fitwise, the end of the jacket sleeve should sit an inch from the end of your thumb. If you are between sizes, buy one size up and have it altered to fit.
