Jonathan Anderson is changing the name of the menswear game …
Jonathan Anderson, Paris-based creative director of Dior menswear and womenswear, from Magherafelt in Derry and the son of Irish rugby international Willie Anderson, has arguably the biggest role in fashion right now.
In his first menswear show for the house, Jonathan showed a version of Dior’s famous Bar jacket in Donegal tweed, styling it with ballooning cargo shorts. Velvet jackets, slouchy wool sweaters, barrel-leg jeans, preppy striped untucked shirts with loosely knotted ties, sneakers with pastel coloured stripes, and suede and leather loafers, represented – in Jonathan’s words – “a reconstruction of formality … with past things discovered in the archive”.
It was a defining moment after years of polarised menswear – streetwear and athleisure at one pole, formal tailoring at the other – and a swing back to getting properly “dressed”. The show has over a billion views and counting online …

How to parse a collection like this – rough-around-the-edges dandy – for the man in the street?
1. Good shirts. Buy the best you can (we rate M&S Autograph Sartorial, with double cuffs, they come in Slim and Standard fits.) Toothpaste striped shirts are in. Wear untucked, with a tie, under a sweater. Dior showed ties with the logo visible, sure to become a fashion must-have.

2. Dust off your old Donegal tweed jacket. You will be surprised at how “now” it looks. This will give your outfit a relaxed, “this old thing” nonchalance. Ditto a velvet jacket for day, if you dare, or evening.

3. Try barrel-leg jeans which will be the shape for men this autumn and into 2026, in pale denim, ideally.

4. Finally, clock Dior’s trainers and loafers (above) and buy a similar shape, or invest in the real thing if you can afford: they will last a lifetime.
