Introducing BÉBHÍNN, a new made to order ethical womenswear label specialising in Irish linen ...
We’re always pleased to see new Irish fashion labels enter the market, and when they are ethically made with natural fabrics which are locally sourced it’s an even bigger bonus. With the increasing interest in sustainable and ethical fashion in Ireland (who else spotted the #WhoMadeMyClothes initiative popping up on social media last month?) it looks like Waterford-based designer Bébhínn McGrath has tapped into a growing niche. “I have always been intrigued by where our clothes come from, who made them and at what cost? So when I decided to establish my own label there wasn’t a second thought that it wouldn’t be ethical in as many ways as possible.” The linen used for the entire collection is woven by Emblem Weavers in Wexford and the Merino wool used for the two knitwear pieces comes from Donegal Yarns in Donegal. The collection itself is designed and crafted by Bébhínn in her home studio. You can’t get much more local and traceable than that…
The debut collection features 16 pieces that can all be mixed and matched and will work just as well for an Irish summer (layered up) as they will in the warmer climes that linen calls out for. The aim with this brand was to produce items that were long lasting, that you can come back to time and time again and that won’t go out of fashion. With a focus on modern cuts and styles made using traditional fabrics and techniques, these pieces offer a new perspective on linen. “It was very important to me that I use Irish produce as the linen industry in Ireland used to be one of our biggest industries and now there are only a handful of working mills left. Irish linen is the best in the world and that should be celebrated.”
The collection launches today (May 15) and is available on a made to order basis. Visit www.bebhinn.ie for more.
