The New Age of Enlightenment

Women should no longer suffer in silence with symptoms of the menopause – being open on the subject has benefits for everyone …

For too long, menopause was a taboo subject in Ireland – the dirty secret of women’s health, something rarely discussed even between mothers and their daughters, sisters, or close friends. It’s a topic which women have felt embarrassed to raise with their GP, let alone their employer – that is, if they even knew what name to give to the symptoms they were experiencing or how to describe the way they were feeling.

With symptoms ranging from hot flashes to incontinence, night sweats to joint pain, insomnia to vaginal dryness, and mood swings to anxiety, it’s no wonder the best many women could do was say, “I just want my old self back!”, while simultaneously wondering if they were losing their mind.

Thankfully this has started to change, and initiatives such as menopause awareness month play an important role in disseminating information and raising awareness of an issue about which there is still widespread ignorance.

Employers too have begun to realise that there is no benefit to be gained from ignoring something that’s going to affect every woman who works for them at some point in their lives, as well as the wives, partners and daughters of other staff members. In a bid to retain talent and be recognised as workplaces that are female-friendly for women of all ages, the most enlightened have already begun to implement menopause awareness policies, and others are beginning to follow suit. Employers know they can no longer expect their staff to leave their hormones at the office door.

Thanks to the willingness of celebrities and other public figures to speak out on the topic, women are now more likely to educate themselves about menopause and discuss it more openly. Earlier this year, Liveline was inundated with calls from women wanting to share their experiences and it seemed as if the whole country was talking about menopause! It’s clear that the more we talk about menopause, the more awareness will grow – and that can only be a good thing, given the fact that half the population will go through it.

In essence, menopause is the natural biological transition that happens when a woman ceases to have periods, and is no longer able to conceive and reproduce naturally. The word menopause is technically used to mark the date one year from the last period, but women experience symptoms associated with waning fertility in the years which lead up to this date, during what is known as perimenopause, which typically happens to women in their forties, and in the years afterwards.

Common symptoms of menopause include brain fog, bladder problems, fatigue, irritability, aches, and pains, thinning hair, weight gain and recurrent urinary tract infections, with research showing that 80% of women experience at least some symptoms, to a greater or lesser degree.

It’s important to realise that every woman’s experience of menopause is unique and, while only a lucky 20% sail through with ease, the symptoms experienced by one woman may not necessarily be the same as those experienced by another. But what almost all women have in common, is that their body is changing, and that those changes are likely to have physical, physiological and sexual implications.

Thankfully, the days of suffering in silence and pretending the perimenopause and menopause are not happening are over. Now that women are talking more about what they are going through, rather than sitting back and putting up with symptoms they find upsetting and sometimes frightening, they are taking charge and looking at how best to manage them.

The research and development team at Revive Active followed a rigorous process to formulate a comprehensive super supplement designed to support women through this stage of their lives.
