Discover new films that you may have missed to watch at home over the bank holiday weekend. This is the keep-you-on-the-edge-of-your-seat stuff on Netflix, Now TV, Apple TV and Amazon Prime right now …

In The Land of Saints and Sinners

On Netflix: Liam Neeson looks right at home in this action thriller set in Northern Ireland against the picturesque backdrop of Donegal. Neeson plays Finbar Murphy, a retired assassin, who is hoping to leave his dark past behind him. He leads a quiet life in a small coastal town in Donegal, far from the political violence that grips the rest of the country. When an on-the-run IRA team show up, Finbar soon discovers that one of them has been abusing a local girl and he steps in. The stellar cast of Irish actors leaps out at you – each one owning their role in the most captivating way. Normal People’s Desmond Eastwood plays a menacing IRA member, whose sister, the leader of the group is played by Kerry Condon. Kerry steps right out of herself and into this uncharacteristically menacing role – she’s fantastic. Ciarán Hinds is sublime in there too with Bad Sisters’ Sarah Greane and of course Colm Meaney, as well as Game of Thrones’ Jack Gleeson. This fantastic cast, with breathtaking filming of the scenery in Ireland, create a most captivating film. Photograph courtesy of Netflix.

Triangle of Sadness

On Netflix: Ruben Östlund’s Triangle of Sadness has recently arrived on Netflix and if you haven’t had the all-encompasssing experience of watching it, then there is no time like the present to sink your teeth in. Released in 2022, this satirical dark comedy film is wickedly funny. It is an Oscar-nominated, Palm D’Or winner with a poignant message of social hierarchy turning upside down, revealing the tawdry relationship between money, power and beauty. The film begins with couple Carl (played by Harris Dickinson) and Yaya (played by Charlbi Dean), both models focused on beauty and the high life who are gifted a trip on a luxury cruise by way of Yaya’s social media work. The lavishness and luxe of said cruise turns sour in the space of a scene, one knows this film is going somewhere dark and raw – in a comedic manner. Seriously genius filmmaking and worthy of all of its nominations and awards, The Triangle of Sadness also stars Woody Harrelson, Dolly De Leon, Sunnyi Melles. Photograph courtesy of Netflix.

BlackBerry

On Now TV: Have you ever owned a BlackBerry? Once the most sought-after mobile on the market, have you ever wondered where it all went wrong for the revolutionary device? In this 2023 biographic comedy drama the true story of what became of the two inventors is unveiled in this film which delves deeper than ever before into BlackBerry’s meteoric rise and subsequent fall in popularity. A great cast with the hilarious Glenn Howerton (known for his role and creation of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia), Jay Baruchal, Cary Elwes and Mad Men’s Rich Sommer. If this is something you may have missed then you should right that wrong this weekend. Photograph courtesy of Now TV.

Jules

On Now TV: This 2023 sci-fi comedy follows Ben Kingsley, a quiet man whose life is upended when a UFO crash-lands in his backyard in rural Pennsylvania. He befriends the mysterious extraterrestrial who lands with the UFO, but things start to get complicated when two neighbours discover it and the government closes in. Weird, witty and unexpectedly sweet, it’s sure to start your weekend off on the right note. Photograph courtesy of Now TV.

Stolen

On Netflix: This Swedish thriller demands your full focus with its inclusion of subtitles and the general grip and grit of the whole experience. Stolen is a 2024 film and follows the story of a young woman from Sweden’s indigenous Sámi community who tracks down a killer to settle a personal score. Inspired by real events, it will leave you Googling every detail after viewing. Starring Elin Kristina Oskal, Martin Wallström and Lars-Ánte Wasara, add to it to the watch-list this for this weekend. Scoop

On Netflix: A stellar cast and excellent filmmaking combine to tell the story of how the BBC obtained the bombshell interview with Prince Andrew which uncovered detail about his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Billy Piper plays Sam McAlister, the hardworking producer and booker on Newsnight who managed to secure the interview with Prince Andrew. The interviewer, Emily Maitlis, was played by Gillian Anderson – who is a dead-ringer for the former Newsnight host and author of Airhead. The film also stars Rufus Sewell as Prince Andrew – totally unrecognisable – and also Kate Fleetwood, Connor Swindells, Aoife Hinds, Romola Gara, Jordan Kouamé, Keely Hawes and more. This is a gripping flick on how, really, the truth will always come out. Photograph courtesy of Netflix.
