Báinín – pronounced ‘bawneen’; ‘little white’ in English – is the name given to the ivory white undyed Irish sheep wool with which Aran sweaters are knitted.
Alongside Donegal tweed and Irish linen, báinín embodies so much that is good about Ireland – it is simple, pure, understated. The same adjectives might well describe the bedroom of our dreams, which is serene, with a beautifully made bed – a calm refuge.
Báinín blankets were for a long time a fixture on Irish beds, layered atop a starched sheet, neatly tucked in with hospital corners, warm as toast.
Now “Irish beds” might be made with linen sheets (those on the beds at Buckingham Palace are supplied by Fergusons of Co Down), a pretty cotton toile de jouy duvet by Foxford, Irish wool pillows by Woolow, and folded throws and blankets from Avoca, Magee, or Cushendale.
All the ingredients for a carefully made bed are Irish made or from Irish companies. Supporting them is a good way to start and end the day.
