December is the month of overindulgence and what better way to kick start the festive feasting than with a Christmas sandwich St Nick himself would approve of. Whatever your sandwich preferences might be, there is a delicious abundance to choose from and one to suit every palate; sometimes maybe even two or three! Here are five of the best joints to get your Christmas kicks, sandwich style.

1. 147 Deli, Parnell St, Dublin 1

The undisputed kings of Christmas sandwiches, the 147 Christmas sandwich is crammed with honey glazed ham, turkey, bacon fat sprouts, crispy bacon crumb, Brie, sage and hazelnut stuffing and cranberry sauce with a side of chicken wing gravy acting as that oh so important ‘moist maker’. It’s served on Tartine bakery granary bread and is without a doubt the hottest Christmas sandwich ticket in town. Get it while you can. Instagram; @147deli.

2. Crack Jenny’s Tavern, Lavitt’s Quay, Cork

On Cork’s Lavitt’s Quay, Crack Jenny’s is a self-proclaimed “traditional boozer fused with a modern dive bar, with decor inspired by Cork’s long maritime tradition”. The Christmas sandwich at Crack Jenny’s is an homage to Cork’s amazing producers and includes a generous portion of Tom Durcan’s famous spiced beef, Brie, pickled red cabbage, horseradish with West Cork butter slathered over artisan sourdough bread. 3. Ursa Minor Bakehouse, Ballycastle, Co Antrim

In beautiful Antrim, the Ursa Minor Christmas sandwich is a vision to behold with miso and apple jelly roasted celeriac, herbed sage and onion stuffing, cranberry and orange sauce, crispy cavolo nero finished with homemade mayonnaise and Coolea cheese. If you ever needed an excuse to head North at this time of the year (Christmas shopping aside) this is it. Incidentally, pick up a bag of the homemade ricciarelli, traditional sweet and chewy festive almond biscuits from Siena or a box of their festive mince pies. www.ursaminorbakehouse.com.

4. Chimac, various locations, Dublin

Just in case you needed yet another excuse to visit Chimac, behold the Chimac Christmas burger; a festive feast with brussel sprout kimchi, sriracha candied bacon, cranberry mayonnaise and house pickles with a side of adobo gravy for some delicious dunking. Made with free range Irish chicken, this is the Christmas chicken burger of dreams and yes, burgers are handheld so this is technically a sandwich. www.chimac.ie.

5. Little Acorn Café, Baltinglass, Co Wicklow

A cosy room with a blazing fire and excellent food, what could be better than a festive trip to Little Acorn Café in Co Wicklow? Adding in a handheld festive feast perhaps. The Little Acorn Christmas sandwich is just one of the many reasons to visit this gem. The sandwich contains roasted turkey, O’Neill’s ham hock, Wicklow Brie, bacon, herb and onion stuffing, brussel sprout slaw and cranberry mayo on sourdough bread, all served with a side of homemade crisps. To be honest, you can’t go wrong with anything you order here. Instagram; @littleacorncafe.

Other notable Christmas sandwiches that are worth a mention, and indeed, worth eating are the Christmas cracker at Juniors www.juniors.ie, the Christmas croissant at Bread 41 www.bread41.ie, and the Christmas toastie at Two Boys Brew www.twoboysbrew.ie.
