Try a ballet skirt

While we’ve embraced ballerina shoes all summer long, the ballet inspired look has reached skirts too. Try Marks & Spencer and Arket for balletic-inspired tulle skirts that scream elegance. We love this look best when it’s streamlined. Pair it with a simple black body, a longline black blazer (nab this one if you still can) and a pair of kitten heels or embellished ballet flats. It’s an easy look that’s an alternative to the typical racing outfit. Black tulle skirt, M&S Collection, €60, at Marks & Spencer.

Bag a ‘done in one’ dress

Black ruched hairband, €8.99, earrings, €10.99, floral print dress, €19.99, shoes, RRP, €41, TK Maxx price, €24.99; all at TK Maxx.

A pretty, printed dress is the ultimate ‘done in one’ look. There’s no need to worry about co-ordinating anything, other than your accessories. Our tip? With transeasonal shopping in mind, choose a floral print with a dark background, such as the one pictured, it’s got carry-over appeal into autumn. Trade a straw hat, or boater, for an autumn-friendly fabric such as leather – it’s the perfect finish for a dramatic headband.

Style up secondhand

By now, we know that shopping your own wardrobe is the best thing you can do in order to limit your environmental impact while getting dressed. The next best thing is buying vintage. In the spirit of secondhand September, we’ve been inspired by style influencer Jenny Walton (Instagram @jennymwalton), wearing her grandmother’s floral 1950s dress to attend fashion week. It puts paid to the idea that an outfit has to be new to be special, it’s a look that’s wholly unique. In other words, you won’t turn up at race day worried you’ll be twinning with one of your fellow attendees. If you don’t happen to have a shared family closet brimming with vintage goodies, never fear, turn to well-loved spots such as Jenny Vander on Drury Street in Dublin, where the eclectic selection of frothy, feminine dresses, are perfectly on brand for the season’s ladylike aesthetic.
