The 5 Best Series To Stream This Weekend

From thrillers to sci-fi and reboots to comedy, there’s something for everyone in our pick of the top five series out now …

Say Nothing, Disney+

FX series Say Nothing on Disney+ is a gripping story set in Northern Ireland during The Troubles, spanning four decades. The limtied series is based on the book by Patrick Radden Keefe and starts with the shocking disappearance of Jean McConville, a single mother of ten who was abducted from her home in 1972 and never seen alive again. Following various IRA members, over nine episodes the story explores the extremes some people will go to in the name of their beliefs, the way a deeply divided society can suddenly tip over into armed conflict, and the emotional and psychological costs of a code of silence. Not for the faint-hearted, but an important part of our history that we shouldn’t ignore. Image via Disney+

Dune: Prophecy, Sky Atlantic

From the expansive universe of the hit movie franchise Dune, David Lynch’s sci-fi epic starring Zendaya and Timothee Chalamet, comes this six-episode prequel about the founding of the fabled sect that will become known as the Bene Gesserit. With Sisterhood of Dune the first in a trilogy of novels, there’s plenty more material for future series, but you can start Prophecy as a point of entry to the franchise without having read the books or seen the films. The stellar cast includes Emily Watson (Chernobyl), Charithra Chandran (Bridgerton)Olivia Williams (The Crown), Jodhi May and Faoileann Cunningham from The Witcher, Aoife Hinds (Normal People), Shalom Brune-Franklin (Line of Duty), Mark Strong (Cruella) and Jihae (Succession). A Man on the Inside, Netflix

The legendary Ted Danson stars as Charles in this new comedy series based on an unbelievable true story. Charles is in a retirement rut, so his daughter (Mary Elizabeth Ellis) urges him to try new things. He answers a private detective’s ad and is hired to do an unusual job: infiltrate a retirement home and track down a missing family heirloom. In the process, he gets to know all the colourful residents and staff, but soon finds himself getting a new appetite for life. The series is created by Mike Schur, the man behind Danson’s hit Netflix series The Good Place. If you like it, Parks & Recreation and Only Murders in the Building, you’ll love this. Cruel Intentions, Prime Video

Cruel Intentions is the TV series reboot of the 1999 cult classic film of the same name starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon, Selma Blair and Joshua Jackson. The film, set in New York City among rich high schoolers, is a modern retelling of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ 1782 novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses. The series takes place at Manchester College in Washington DC where the conniving Caroline Mertueil (Sarah Catherine Hook) and Lucien Belmont (Zac Burgess) will do anything to stay atop the social hierarchy. Following a hazing incident that threatens to bring down the fraternity system, the step-siblings will do whatever they can to preserve their influence, even seducing Annie Grover (Savannah Lee Smith), the daughter of the US Vice President. Bad Sisters, Apple TV+

Fans of the darkly comedic drama, executive-produced and starring BAFTA award-winning Sharon Horgan, will delight that season two is on Apple TV+ now. The first two episodes in the eight episode series debuted on November 13, followed by one to be released every Wednesday until December 25. That’s after Christmas dinner viewing sorted! The second season is as wonderfully twisted as the first, so we can’t wait to see how this turns out. The story picks up two years after the first with the sisters – played expertly by Horgan alongside Eve Hewson, Anne-Marie Duff, Eva Birthistle and Sarah Greene – when past truths resurface and the ladies are thrust back into the spotlight. The new deadly focus? Duff’s new husband, played by Owen McDonnell, from hit show Killing Eve, and from where another new cast member joins, Fiona Shaw. Okay, we promise, no more spoilers – watch the first few episodes now. Image via Apple TV+
