Summer’s definitive shoe? The hard-working, jute-soled espadrille. Re-worked in the 1960s by designer Yves Saint Laurent for Spanish family Castañer (the brand had been making traditional rope-soled shoes since 1927), he made a case for a wedge-heeled espadrille. Cut to SS22, Castañer is still making the best jute shoes around. Dior’s Maria Grazia Chiuri is also known for her ultra-cool take on the comfortable shoe. Depending on the style you choose (wedge, flatform or classic), you can wear espadrilles with just about anything from midi or mini skirts to cropped linen trousers and floaty floor-skimming dresses.
