THE GLOSS | GOODBODY Investment Club empowers candid conversations on topics that matter to women. Here we explore why it is essential for women to take control of their financial future …
No matter how carefully you plan, life will throw you a curveball at some point. A divorce, early widowhood, an illness or sudden caring responsibilities can take a major financial toll, in addition to the physical and emotional trauma of such an event. Some women will be equipped to navigate these unexpected life events. Many will not. That’s why, in October 2021, we launched THE GLOSS | GOODBODY Investment Club to make sure women have a route to the financial knowledge and expertise to give them the confidence to take ownership of their own financial future, no matter their life stage.
Planning your financial future
There are a few trends that profoundly impact women’s wealth. Firstly, on average, women live longer than men. Yet oftentimes they are not prepared for a long retirement, nor have they considered their inheritance plans. Caregiving responsibilities – whether for young children, parents, or a loved one – impact women’s financial independence, with many leaving paid employment to support their families.
Divorce and widowhood are life events that can also have a deep and lasting impact on women’s finances. While coping with loss and emotions, suddenly there are a range of financial responsibilities to address without a partner’s income or support at home, such as funding your children’s education, protecting your family for the future and life and illness insurance, among others.
It’s natural to feel overwhelmed when thinking about such life events – and it can often feel easier to take a back seat when it comes to financial planning. But the benefits of taking an active role in managing your financial resources, or those of your family, cannot be overstated. Think of it as a form of self-care. There are routes to financial education – through initiatives like the Investment Club – or you can work with experienced advisers to create a lifelong financial plan that covers every aspect of your finances, as well as your aspirations and needs for the future, from anticipated career breaks to retirement plans.
