Who? Gearóid Muldowney, along with his wife Jo Anne Butler, runs design studio and homewares brand Superfolk.
What do you wear to work and off duty? Mainly hardwearing, practical clothes suitable for wearing in the workshop or studio: wool, heavy cotton, corduroys and Keen boots. In the summer, linen shirts and shorts with sandals.
Investment pieces? Living in the west of Ireland means a good jacket is essential. I own a few very good jackets: a heavy waxed motorcycle jacket, which I love, I’ve had it for more than ten years. I have technical jackets, fly fishing jackets, shells and insulating layers, all from Patagonia.
Blue Capilene half-zip top, €100; www.patagonia.com.
Shopping? I don’t buy a lot of new clothes; I tend to buy well and wear things to the bone. I love clothes that I can repair myself, clothes that need maintenance. I get satisfaction from keeping a piece of clothing on the go for years; many of my clothes have been repaired. I re-wax my jacket every other year. I wash and reapply Durable Water Repellent finish to all the family’s waterproof jackets every year. I’m also the designated family sewing person – think elbow patches and darning.
Style icon? Actor Steve McQueen mixed with Irish author Manchán Magan and American singer-songwriter Devendra Banhart.
Blue diamond wool scarf, €67.50; www.molloyandsons.com.
Wishlist? Any scarf from my friend Kieran Molloy or Scottish brand Kestin.
Signature scent? I’ve been wearing 2 Man by Comme des Garçons for the last 15 years. It’s distinctive. It smells like a carpenter at Christmas.
Who cuts your hair? I like to get my hair cut when I travel. A trip to the barber shop in another country is always a rich experience.
Any gadgets? I have a soft spot for well-crafted camping knives. I have a few different knives from Finnish knife brand Marttiini, whose original factory I visited in northern Finland.
Coffee order? A flat white. We recently partnered with CoffeeWerk + Press in Galway to illustrate a line of coffee for them, roasted by April Coffee Roasters in Copenhagen.
How do you unwind? I like to fly fish for wild brown trout or salmon. I sometimes fish with angling guide Tom Doc O’Sullivan on the western lakes.
Favourite indulgence? Japanese Whiskey Nikka From The Barrel.
Books or Netflix? Books. Is A River Alive? by Robert Macfarlane; Pheasant Tail Simplicity by Yvon Chouinard, Craig Mathews and Mauro Mazzo; Thirty-Two Words For Field by Manchán Magan.
Brunch or dinner? Dinner, ideally cooked outdoors. I love seafood, game and homegrown vegetables. I love the satisfaction of eating wild food I’ve foraged or caught myself.
What’s on your to do list for 2026? Fishing trips abroad in the new year and possibly a walking cattle adventure with Max Jones in Italy.
