We speak to founders of Skall Studio, sisters Julie and Marie Skall, in the wake of the brand’s autumn winter 2022 show at Copenhagen Fashion Week …
A glance at the feed of Copenhagen brand Skall Studio is like embracing a moment of serenity. Think clean lines, muted colours and fans of the brand wearing its pieces in bucolic settings. The label’s autumn winter 2022 collection, which debuted at Copenhagen Fashion Week last week, focused on comfort, prairie-inspired shapes and fused beautiful dresses with contemporary tailoring. We speak to co-founders, sisters Julie and Marie Skall, about the slow living ethos the brand is based upon.

What is the theme of the autumn winter 2022 collection? How does it differ from your other collections?
The Skall Studio autumn winter 2022 collection is deeply rooted in English country style and a philosophy where humans and animals live in peaceful harmony; like Linda and Paul McCartney who lived a peaceful family life at their farm in Scotland, surrounded by their children and animals. We have always had a heart for animals. For instance, Julie brought her dog Shubi all the way from India after having lived and worked there for some years. We are both vegans, just like the McCartney family, and never use fur and leather in our collection. Also, for this collection we have worked even more with conscious materials such as recycled wool, recycled cashmere and recycled cotton.
The collection also includes recycled wool coats where the colour is obtained without dyes and chemicals as different shades of the recycled wool fibers are mixed to obtain colour. The undyed approach is something that we have worked with for a long time in terms of our undyed wool styles. For every step we take we try to embed more new conscious techniques into our collections.
If you had to select a favourite piece from the new collection what would it be and why?
Our signature knitwear, made in Denmark, is always a favourite. The knitted styles are made in wool from Danish sheep in one of the few remaining spinning mills in Denmark and afterwards knitted together in one of the last remaining knitting factories in Denmark. Craftsmanship will always be essential to us, and we can’t wait to wear the new knitted styles as well as the chunky cable knitwear styles from our autumn winter 2022 collection.
It’s fair to say our relationship with clothing has changed drastically in the last two years. How do you see your pieces working within the aesthetic of the collective ‘new normal’?
We have always aimed to design clothes that will stay in someone’s wardrobe for many years. We also have a classic collection featuring our bestselling styles that will always be available – it’s updated every once in a while with new colours and materials. We have increased our focus on this collection as we believe in classic styles made to last.
For Christmas we gave all our employees the book A Monk’s Guide to a Clean House and Mind. It’s one of our favourite books as it inspires you to live a simple life.
Finish the sentence: ‘The Skall Studio woman is …’
… a conscious consumer who wants to keep the same styles in her wardrobe for many years to come.
Your pieces play into a slow fashion mentality and the women you profile on your website embrace slow living, too. Would you say you embrace slow living in your personal lives?
We are so glad that you noticed this as the women we choose to profile are synonymous with our values and the Skall Studio universe. Skall Studio is rooted in our own values and way of living, so yes, we embrace slow living in our own personal lives. For instance, for Christmas we gave all our employees the book A Monk’s Guide to a Clean House and Mind. It’s one of our favourite books as it inspires you to live a simple life.

What’s the single biggest demand you’ve been seeing from your customers lately?
We have increased our focus on outerwear and tailoring and we can definitely see that the demand for these styles has increased. Next season, we have a broader range of outerwear covering different needs – from country life to city life.
From what you’re seeing in the world of fashion, is dressing up back with a bang?
To us dressing up is all about feeling good. If you feel good, you will look fabulous.
What one item of clothing are you looking forward to wearing the most this February?
We can’t wait to wear our new Garden Parka Coat and Garden Parka Jacket – perfect for a walk in the woods paired with rubber boots or for a city stroll paired with flat shoes. We love the countryside as much as we love city life and like when styles can easily adapt to one place or the other.
