Six Autumn Activity Breaks Around Ireland

From golf to horse riding, and leaf peeping to epicurean adventures, get set for a busy season …

The style and sustainability credentials of Native guesthouse have quietly garnered fans and awards for its interesting collaborations. Its new two-day Native Food Trail, €550, is designed to help guests discover the epicurean delights of the region and is based on recommendations from owners, Didi and Simon Ronan. These include Skibbereen Farmer’s Market, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, a one-stop shop for some of West Cork’s finest artisans. Following a bracing walk and swim at Loch Hyne Nature Reserve, lunch is in Baltimore – try the crab sandwiches at Bushes or oysters at Jacob’s Bar. Windswept walks to the Beacon or a boat trip to Sherkin island are the prelude to dinner at Babade – the sister restaurant to the Michelin-starred Dede. On day two, cheese tasting and stocking up on picnic items to take to the Mizen peninsula are on the agenda. Walk to Brow Hill or swim at Barleycove before a pint and some seafood chowder at O’Sullivan’s in Crookhaven. www.native.ie

Somewhere to enjoy the thrill of horsemanship in posh surroundings is at Mount Juliet Estate, Co Kilkenny where a new horseback experience (for both novice and more experienced riders) is part of an indulgent stay, from €275. Guests can choose to stay in either the newly renovated Manor House or more casual Hunter’s Yard. The hotel’s instructors lead guided trails through the estate’s parkland, which also provides scope for riverside walks and fishing. Afterwards, enjoy access to the Health Club with its swimming pool, sauna, steam room and spa. www.mountjuliet.ie

“Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.” So said author F Scott Fitzgerald and nowhere looks as spectacular at this time of year than Mount Congreve, Co Waterford where its 70 acres of magnificent gardens and woodland provide an extraordinary setting for the changing colours of the season. So much so that the estate has created a two-night “Leaf Peeping” escape designed around experiencing the season at its most atmospheric. Guests can stay in one of Mount Congreve’s Forest Eco Cabins, the elegant Courtyard Suite or the Gate Lodges. Bikes are also included for exploring the 46km Waterford Greenway, while The Stables Café provides the perfect place to warm up afterwards with a hot drink or seasonal treat. Prices start from €435 per couple until November 30. www.mountcongreve.com

The new Winter Boatbuilding & Lough Corrib Experience at Ashford Castle, Co Mayo (€500 for two) provides an interesting insight into the history of the lough’s iconic wooden boats. Guests of both Ashford Castle and The Lodge can enjoy access to the lakeside workshop of traditional boatbuilder, fisherman and Ashford Estate ghillie, Frank Costello. A woodworking demonstration followed by a leisurely cruise on Lough Corrib (wrapped in blankets) allows passengers to appreciate the landscape from a different perspective. www.ashfordcastle.com

For a stylish city break, Fitzwilliam Dublin – the recent recipient of a coveted Michelin Key – has a tempting offer which allows guests to try its newly opened Glovers Alley by Adam Nevin restaurant. Enjoy an overnight stay in one of its signature guest rooms inspired by the elegance of Art Deco ocean liners with views of St Stephen’s Green, before a champagne cocktail in The Lounge and then dinner in Glovers Alley. The Discovery tasting menu comprises seven courses showcasing chef Adam Nevin’s confident, comforting menus which are complemented by an exciting drinks list. Including breakfast the following morning, the overnight stay costs from €699 for two people sharing, available until November 14. www.fitzwilliamhoteldublin.com
