An elegant Victorian residence becomes a contemporary haven …
This elegant Victorian residence on Eglinton Road, in the centre of Donnybrook in Dublin, is rich in period charm and architectural detail. While its heritage speaks of timeless sophistication, the homeowners envisioned an interior that embraced a more playful, creative spirit – all while honouring the character and history of the home. With over 30 years experience, interior architecture and design studio Think Contemporary, founded by Joanne Kelly and Anthony Buggy, took on the project.
The interior design studio’s aim was to thoughtfully merge the home’s historic detailing with contemporary functionality – crafting a vibrant, liveable space that embraces modern design sensibilities while preserving the building’s distinctive character and charm.
Each space within the home was designed to evoke its own distinct mood and character, while a considered sense of flow unifies the overall interior. Bold design choices and a confident use of materiality were key to the project’s success, with sculptural lighting used to introduce a sense of drama and atmosphere throughout.
The homeowers envisioned a multifunctional space for entertaining and relaxing. This was achieved by dividing the room into two distinct zones: a dark, custom-made bar that serves as a focal point against a brighter lounge area.
Bold colours and contemporary furniture design from Roche Bobois make for a modern feeling in this Eglington Manor.
The lighting was carefully selected with the aim to accentuate the high ceilings, maintaining the room’s period charm while introducing a contemporary feel.
To create a sanctuary within this busy family home, the bed was repositioned against a newly constructed half-wall, optimising views and enhancing functionality. The contemporary chandelier from Design Heure in France ties all of the bespoke design features together.
On-trend navy walls create a striking contrast with an off-white boucle bed frame.
In further contrast to the bedroom, the design studio aimed for a brighter aesthetic, combining marble-effect wall tiles with navy chevron floor tiles from Artistik Tiles. A custom-made vanity unit in blush pink adds a feminine touch.
Continuing the feminine theme, the dressing room features floor-to-ceiling custom joinery and a central island. Herringbone engineered flooring runs throughout the master suite, connecting all of these spaces seamlessly.
