See All The Fabulous Fashion At Look The Business 2018

We were all inspired to spend a little more time on our work wardrobe, watching LTB18’s 20 models walk our catwalk last night. Fashion from Samui, M&S, Kildare Village, Carolyn Donnelly The Edit, Lennon Courtney, Louise Kennedy and MaxMara provided a gorgeous mix of this season’s trends and colours, expertly styled by Catherine Condell. There was hair and make-up inspiration too, with gorgeous glossy hair by Roy Leigh and beautiful, subtle make-up by Dearbhla Keenan (and their teams from Brown Sugar).

Samui opened the show. For her very special boutique in Cork, Clodagh Shorten selects labels with serious design credentials. Well-known for her love of Dries Van Noten, she also carries great pieces by PAROSH and Rick Owens, Etro, Acne Studios, Dorothee Shumacher and Phillip Lim. From the edgy to the elegant, Shorten’s fashion eye results in a very cool edit. We loved an Acne Studios camel coat and cool PAROSH leopard-print skirt, style with a prim bow-tie blouse by Paule Ka and a green tulle skirt with embellished sweater by PAROSH.

For work classics, it’s difficult to beat Marks and Spencer, where we find great simple dresses, pencil skirts and cashmere sweaters. What is more interesting though, is how fashion-forward M&S has become – and we are now shopping there for the season’s trends – a brilliantly-cut trench, a black tuxedo jacket, a pleated faux leather skirt, a lace blouse, even a knockout jumpsuit. Bright colour punctuated the catwalk – teal, ochre, red and hot pink – proving that you can wear colour to work. One other thing to note about M&S – the brilliant range of footwear, from shootie (shoe-boots) to great block-heel suede pumps, to workday-friendly heels.

At Kildare Village, Reiss, Diane Von Furstenberg, Magee 1866, The Kooples and Escada are the go-to labels for the working wardrobe. From a fabulous muted floral cardigan and matching skirt by Escada, to a stone trench, camel knit and tweed skirt by Magee 1866, to a chic block-colour dress by Diane Von Furstenberg. Separates were layered and great accessories added, showing how we can mix and match and build on an existing wardrobe to update our look for the office.

Carolyn Donnelly The Edit and Lennon Courtney are both at Dunnes Stores. Donnelly’s collection is the perfect capsule for work and weekend – great wool coats in grey and taupe, wool trousers, print dresses, a great blue leather coat, sweater dresses and fantastic oversize silk print scarves. Carolyn even designs her own leather block-heel pumps – brilliantly stylish and comfortable for work. Sonya Lennon and Brendan Courtney’s collection is a vibrant mix of bold colour – a raspberry print dress, a merino stripe knit, pistachio camisole and matching trousers and fun fur stoles – urging us to have fun with our work wardrobe, shake things up a little.

Louise Kennedy is beloved of businesswomen for her exquisite tailoring. This season, her collection is focused on the versatile wardrobe – how to build on existing pieces to update for day and for after-work events in the evening. Wearing a simple wool crepe dress to work? Add a hand-beaded coat and one of Louise’s gorgeous new necklaces. Or add a wrap to tailored trousers and neat waistcoat jacket. Red and amethyst figure too, and great black and purple boucle wool coats and jackets. We love the Zoey tulle skirt too – not strictly office wear, but gorgeous with a sweater and little black booties.

MaxMara, from the divine MaxMara store on the Lisburn Road in Belfast, owned by Nina Walls, closed the show. As stylist Catherine Condell said, “It’s thrilling when a camel coat has the power to stop you in your tracks.” There were cashmere coats, cable knit sweaters, mohair sweaters, and sexy satin jacquard skirts, all in the classic MaxMara palette of camel, grey, taupe and blush pink. Beautifully cut from exquisite fabric, the MaxMara forever piece is a worthwhile investment. But which to choose? We want it all – from an Icon teddy bear coat, to a wool wrap skirt, to an easy, elegant jersey dress. Never mind the chic Whitney bag we have had our eye on for years …
