Sculpture in Kenmare: Visit this Modern Irish Exhibition Now

As part of Kenmare Arts Festival, Kenmare Butter Market is hosting its first ever sculpture exhibition this summer – visit this weekend…

This summer, Kenmare Butter Market is hosting its first sculpture exhibition, MODERN IRISH SCULPTURE, with more than 30 of Ireland’s foremost sculptors. The exhibition will showcase over 70 contemporary works including many large-scale sculptures in this exciting new gallery space – that carries great Co Kerry history in its walls.

Curated by Jackie Ball, Ana Duncan and John Goode, the exhibition opened on the 2nd June at The Kenmare Butter Market, Kenmare, County Kerry and will run until the 24th July.

Exhibiting artists include Martin O’Keefe, Michael Quane, Eileen Mac Donagh, Alva Gallagher, Bob Quinn, Jim Turner, and Cecilia Moore. All sculptors exhibiting have national and international reputations with their work included in private and public collections around the world.

The expertly fashioned artwork is made up of a variety of materials such as steel – like ‘Nova’, by sculptor Martin O’Keefe (pictured above) and bronze – like ‘Surprise Guest’ by Bob Quinn (pictured below).

The Kenmare Butter Market

The Kenmare Butter Market opened in June 2021 to showcase the work of both national and international artists.

Built in the mid 1800’s, the former Kenmare Butter Market was converted to a dance hall in the 1960’s. Located in the heart of Kenmare town, the building was originally purchased to house a whiskey distillery as part of a larger idea to reimagine the whiskey distilling of Islay, that will expand across several new distilleries in other historic spaces including Killarney and on the Iveragh Peninsula.

Kenmare Arts Festival 2022

This unique exhibition is part of the Kenmare Arts Festival 2022, hosting live music, art, theatre, poetry, yoga and more in the Kerry town. Book tickets for July and August events – such as Pilates on the Green, musical artist Maureen O’Sullivan and the Poets Meet Painters competition – here.
