Rife with main character energy, authenticity and playfulness, here’s where to book on your next American road trip …
Nostalgic, often in epic locations and full of design potential, vintage motels promise accessible fantasy and are enjoying a renaissance. American architect Arthur Heineman opened the first motel in 1925 as a budget friendly option for road trips across America. However, it wasn’t until after the Second World War that they became a feature of the American landscape.
Combining functionality and convenience with no-frills rooms, on-site parking, swimming pools and themed décor, they were decidedly unpretentious. One ubiquitous aspect of their design was their enticing neon signs signalling to weary travellers. “In a world of bland, homogenised chain hotels, checking into a classic motel is the perfect accompaniment to any road trip,” says Ellie Seymour. She’s the author of new book Vintage Motels which showcases 40 historic motels, each a stunning example of mid-century architecture. Time seems to have stood still here – but appearances can be deceiving. Every motel has been restored and is a welcoming boutique hotel, without compromising the style and charm of the past.
