Why the monastery at Kylemore Abbey topped the ballot …
This year, the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI) received 124 entries for its prestigious Public Choice Award, supported by Sika Ireland and Velux. From this a shortlist of 48 projects was chosen which included 21 submissions from Dublin, 20 from around Ireland, and six international projects by Irish architects. With 14,000 votes cast in total, the Benedictine Monastery at Kylemore Abbey in Co Galway by Axo Architects emerged as the winner.

Located on the edge of Pollacappul Lough, beneath Duchruach Mountain and near the historic Kylemore Abbey, the new monastery is seamlessly integrated with its dramatic surroundings. Drawing on monastic traditions, the design is a serene and timeless structure that quietly complements its landscape.
“This year’s Public Choice Award winner is a remarkable example of how thoughtful, context-sensitive architecture can enhance both place and purpose,” says RIAI President, Seán Mahon FRIAI. “The new monastery at Kylemore Abbey demonstrates a deep understanding of heritage, landscape, and community, creating a space that feels both grounded in tradition and relevant to the present. We are thrilled to see the public recognise and celebrate architecture that enriches lives and contributes meaningfully to a much loved natural landscape and environment.”

The Arklow Wastewater Treatment Plant, finished in second place, and is civic infrastructure that embodies public good. In third place, the new 12-classroom building at Scoil Naomh Bríd Culleens is filled with daylight, colour, and joy, for 330 children. In fourth place, the redevelopment of the Dún Laoghaire Baths reimagines and opens up a 400m stretch of coastline.
The awards take place at the Merrion Cricket Pavilion in Dublin –an award-winning building by TAKA Architects. For more information on the top ten projects, visit www.riai.ie.
