Possibly The Best Pre-Theatre Dining Experience in Dublin

For regular theatre goers, or those wishing to offer a gift that keeps on giving, read on …

My Fair Lady, Jersey Boys, La Traviata, Beauty and the Beast, Swan Lake… the current and upcoming shows in Bord Gáis Energy Theatre’s exciting AW22 programme comprises Broadway and West End musicals, inspiring operas, emotive dramas and world-renowned ballets.

From the buzz of the foyer and a pre-show drink, to debriefing during the interval and appreciating the Daniel Libeskind-designed theatre – booking a show at the Theatre is a treat in itself. One way to elevate the experience further is by dining in the Theatre’s Circle Club which has just had a glamorous makeover – something I enjoyed recently when I went to see the feel-good Sister Act, starring Lesley Joseph as Mother Superior and Brenda Edwards in the starring role as Deloris Van Cartier.

The décor of the Circle Club Lounge was inspired by the elegance of the Roaring Twenties. Red lacquered tabletops, graphic chevron carpets, jewel-toned club chairs, velvet banquettes and statement artwork all deliver on the design brief, creating a sense of occasion and exclusivity. Any midweek visit becomes an occasion, and any work-related stress dissolves as soon as guests are seated at their (posh) tables.

Members, you see, enjoy a range of benefits – from exclusive access to the Circle Club for every show, to the best seats in the house and special show night menus. The latter is a carefully choreographed dining experience, without a sense of urgency. Arriving at 6pm for a 7.30pm start, two courses are served before the show begins, while dessert is waiting (with additional drinks) during the interval. It works brilliantly; the menu and wine list are both superb. The menu, covering light bites to more substantial entrees, is served by attentive staff; each guest has a dedicated host or hostess, adding to the sense of exclusivity.

Post-show, members can return to the Circle Club for a night cap or take in the new Terrace Club. This is a truly special space on the fifth floor of the theatre, decorated in seductive shades of ebony and gold. There’s also a private outdoor terrace with wonderful views over Grand Canal Dock. Access to these private spaces is offered as part of three tiered memberships. There are options to suit all types of theatre fans and their budgets.
