Last season, designers reimagined denim to create elevated pieces that promise to breathe new life into workwear: every luxury fashion house, from Chanel to Dries Van Noten, sent super-smart indigo and classic blue (no fading) jeans down their runways.

Kay Barron, luxury online retailer Net-A-Porter’s fashion director – and author of How to Wear Everything (€25.22, at Eason) – shares her top tips when shopping for office-appropriate denim: “For me, denim is always an investment, mainly because I spend so much time wearing it. Think ‘smart’ denim for the office and keep the ripped, frayed or faded styles for off-duty. There is an unexpected smartness to double denim, especially when the pieces are a perfect colour match, which both Alaïa and Khaite do so well. Also, and this is integral: always consider your belt. The smarter the belt, (like Dehanche’s Hollyhock leather belt) the smarter your denim will appear. Make sure the length works with heels if that is your go-to look. And finally, heavier weight denim is always a denim that will last,” she says.

Barrel-leg, straight-leg and cuffed-style jeans are the shapes to look out for right now. Marks & Spencer’s Autograph dark indigo high-waisted barrel-leg jeans are 100 per cent office-appropriate when paired with a navy blazer. Jigsaw’s Sailor wide-leg trouser-style jeans are a denim iteration of the label’s bestselling trousers and the slightly cropped shape adds elegance. Tibi’s indigo Barry jeans have hidden button snaps at the hem for built-in temporary length alterations so you can change heel heights: pair with a tonal navy knit for a modern take on corporate dressing. Maintain the colour of your jeans by turning them inside out and adding vinegar to a cold water wash.
