A special celebration of Carl Hansen & Son furniture is available for all to experience this week in Blackrock, Co Dublin
This week, Helle Moyna, owner of the Nordic Elements design store in Blackrock, Co Dublin hosts a special celebration of the work of Danish brand Carl Hansen & Son. The unique story of Carl Hansen & Son, and designer Hans J Wegner who designed so many of the pieces we know and love, comes together in a special collaboration and exhibition, hosted by Thonos Kotson who has travelled from the firm’s headquarters in Copenhagen to tell the story of the brand to visitors to the store, customers, architects and interior designers.

At the store’s Carl Hansen & Son open house (10am-5pm Thurs-Sat), there’s an opportunity to see wonderful examples of the outstanding furniture craftsmanship for which Carl Hansen is synonymous, as well as a chance to see a craftsman weaving a seat for the iconic Wishbone Chair, the first product designed exclusively by Wegner for Carl Hansen & Son in 1949. More than 100 steps are required to manufacture each Wishbone Chair, most of which are carried out by hand. As well as this iconic design, there are other members of the series of Wegner dining and lounge chairs on display along with a fabulous extendable dining table, a sleek velvet-covered sofa, coffee tables and other distinctive, elegant pieces.

While Wegner’s association with the company is well known, the Carl Hansen & Son story began much earlier, in 1908, when Danish cabinetmaker Carl Hansen opened a small furniture workshop on the Danish island of Fugen. For more than a century, and through multiple generations of the Hansen family, the brand has stuck to its principles of artisanal excellence, sustainability and good design. As Helle says, furniture from Carl Hansen & Son is so timeless “it works beautifully in any setting – contemporary or period – lending a modern context to every interior”.

She is the queen of no makeup makeup and even manages to make a smokey eye look subtle. When everyone else was going for heavy contour and laminated eyebrows, she continued to promote enhancing your natural features with simple tricks and smart product placement. If you have seen any of her videos, you will notice how little product she actually uses. Even Victoria Beckham commented how surprised she was when she went to remove her makeup after a shoot with Lisa on how little product was applied.
