My World at Home: Luis Rodriguez’s New York Apartment

See inside THE GLOSS New York Fashion Editor’s UPPER WEST SIDE home …

The fashion-loving stylist has created a highly personal home by mixing mid-century pieces with unusual vintage store finds. In the sitting area of the apartment, the Timothy Oulton tan leather loveseat takes centre-stage, the mid-century swivel chair is from 20th Century Artifacts and is upholstered in an electric orange embossed fabric from the same period.

Name: Luis Rodriguez, THE GLOSS New York Fashion Editor Address: Upper West Side, New York My home: A Manhattan apartment where art and life perfectly collide The vibe: Maximalist.

I moved to the Upper West Side about a year ago. It’s like living in a Woody Allen movie. New York living can be tight. The proportion of the apartment is key: the height of the ceiling relative to the room sizes. I would describe my home as small, cosy and maximalist. I like being surrounded by memories and things I love. The more the merrier. I love distressed pieces. Even modern pieces, I prefer “worn in” – a bit like me! I cover every blank space available on my walls, I hate bare walls. I’m not afraid of pattern or colour, as a maximalist you never worry if a piece will “go” with your decor. My favourite pieces? A mid-century Italian Fornasetti-style white horse head lamp, my vintage movie posters and a small hand-carved wooden model of the 1930s ill-fated French SS Normandie. I get most of my furniture from vintage furniture stores and ABC Carpet & Home. My favourite store is 20th Century Artifacts in Nolita. I’m currently chasing a vintage Fornasetti umbrella stand. Over the years, my decorating style has become less safe, less obsessed with status symbols and more and more personal.

The classic Manhattan brownstone has had a fresh white exterior paint job.

The wonderfully layered living space has been curated over time. Rodriguez has a good eye for design and a great collection of coffee table art and fashion books.

The workspace is just another part of the living area; the desk is from ABC Carpet & Home and the leather chair is from Regeneration, both were carefully selected to blend into their surroundings.

A glimpse into the kitchen: the deft layering is Rodriguez’s’ trademark style.
