Luxury sleepwear label Zzzana on what to look for when shopping sustainably …
Finding stylish sleepwear is one thing, finding a brand that’s heavy on luxury and has sustainable kudos is quite another. Enter, Irish sleepwear brand Zzzana. Founded in 2021, Zzzana offers a range of curated and breathable pyjamas as well as luxury robes and matching eye masks. The USP? Each piece is made using 100 percent organic bamboo which is super soft. And, because bamboo is a self-regenerating plant that grows rapidly and requires very little water, it makes for a much more sustainable alternative to silk. We asked the brand to share some insights on how to enjoy fashion in a more sustainable way.

What are your sustainability goals for 2022?
We plan to continue on our design and innovation journey with Zzzana while committing to only using sustainable products. For us, the last two years were really about sourcing the best quality materials and manufacturers who can guarantee ethical production. Now we have launched, we want to continue to deliver exactly what the customer wants. We are adding new styles to our Zzzana range as a result of customers’ feedback, with nightshirts launching later this spring.
We want to continue to educate our customers on the benefits of bamboo, not just on the environment but also on the body. Bamboo is naturally temperature-regulating, moisture-wicking and antibacterial, it contains a host of benefits that can not be associated with any other material. As we know, the impact of temperature on sleep is huge. Some studies suggest that the discomfort of sleeping when too warm or too cold can cause more frequent awakenings throughout the night and can disrupt restorative rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. This could be one of the reasons that although you may have ‘slept’ a good eight hours you don’t feel rested as the quality of your deep REM sleep has been affected.
Do you have any export plans?
We are currently focused on the Irish market at the moment and hope to export Zzzana in the future. We really want to absorb as much feedback and information as we can from our customers to ensure that when we do expand we do so in a way that does not affect the quality of our sustainable products.
What advice would you give a shopper looking to become more eco-conscious?
Always read the label! We are now more attuned to ‘greenwashing’ than ever. A brand might have a specific sustainable range of clothing available but if you read the label and investigate further, are the majority of the materials just a small percent of more sustainable elements? For example, a small percentage of bamboo.
Look at not just the material but how the materials are sourced and harvested. We must ask ourselves as consumers, ‘Is this ethical and responsible?’ Sustainable clothing is often left out in the cold for being expensive, however people are paying a lot of money for polyester sleepwear which is mind-boggling as it is such an irritant on the skin due to its chemical compounds and poor quality. Always buy less and invest in good quality, sustainable products. You will own them for longer and your body and the environment will thank you.
What should we be looking for?
It’s on customers to educate themselves on the brands they choose to purchase. Research the brand thoroughly, look out for keywords such as sustainable, vegan, organic, fair-trade, and higher percentages of sustainable materials. Look at the composition of the material, for example it might say 95 percent polyester, 5 percent bamboo – ask yourself, is this being sold as a bamboo item? Also, take a step back and look at the retailer. Are they known for their commitment to fair-trade and ethical sourcing or are they jumping on a current trend, which when investigated can often be the case.
