Stay Safe In The Sun: We Love This New Irish Self-Tan

These are the mists and mousses that deliver a natural-looking self-tan, just in time for summer holidays …

Make-up artist Suzie O’Neill, founder of Ayu Cosmetics, has developed her first tanning range, AyuGlo, offering both a mousse and a liquid in light/medium or medium/dark shade. O’Neill responded to demand from her customers for a tan: “I always wanted to develop a tan which solved all the issues we’ve all experienced using other tans. I really wanted to develop a tan that was super-easy to apply, full of skin-loving ingredients and gave the most beautiful natural finish …. It has been by far the toughest product we have created to date.”

A big consideration with home tans is the smell – lots of people are put off by overpowering chemical smells, so this one is notable for its scent, which is genuinely pleasant with a soft floral fragrance that’s not too strong. Both the mousse and the liquid are quick and easy to apply, and don’t dry skin out, and they wear off gradually and evenly. They are suitable for sensitive skin, safe to use during pregnancy, vegan-friendly and not tested on animals. €23.50 each; online at www.Ayu.ie

Another I’ve been trying is Three Warriors Face Tan Aqua Mist, made in Tasmania and with an interesting formula (it’s rich in hydrating aloe juice). At €34.99 for 100ml this is more expensive than most, but I like the glass bottle, certified organic credentials and subtle results. It suits people who want the most subtle hint of colour. It’s available at Edvard & Pink salon in Dundrum, where you can also have it applied as a spray-tan – I tried this out and found it really good (ask for Ramona). I had just one “coat” for a natural look, while two coats will take you darker for holidays if you prefer. E&P is a great one-stop beauty shop for before a holiday, by the way, as you can have everything from a pedicure to a facial here across its three floors. Full body spray tan €40. Levels 4, 5 & 6, Dundrum Town Centre, Dublin 14; www.edvardandpink.ie

If you’re browsing in Boots, I recommend Isle of Paradise Self-Tanning Water sprays and drops (currently from €14.99, and available in refill pouches too, saving on plastic) while at Brown Thomas, Amanda Harrington’s Jet Set Duo, a face mist with kabuki brush, is foolproof for a luxe tan (€29).
