Even if you’ve never heard of ‘barbiecore’ you can hazard a guess at what the trend entails. suffice to say, Right now we’re tickled pink …
By now, the majority of us have seen the stills from the upcoming Barbie film, set for release in 2023, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. And, while we are a little dubious as to how the Mattel icon will translate to the big screen, its influence over fashion is crystal clear.
Call it the Barbie effect, or what the trend-hunters are dubbing ‘Barbiecore’. In the past month, Google searches for barbiecore have increased by 257 per cent, with a particular focus on fluorescent colours and matching pink sets. It’s creeping into our interiors, too. According to Pinterest, searches for the ‘Barbie aesthetic’ increased 127 per cent during the same time period.
Indeed, the trend has been gathering momentum for months. See Pierpaolo Piccioli’s autumn winter 2022 show at Valentino, an almost exclusive foray into Barbie pink. For Piccioli, it was about unity of colour as a springboard for other conversations. “I wanted to use one colour to highlight fashion as cut, design, silhouette, shapes, volumes, textures,” he said.

The Barbiecore trend is described by Nick Drewe, Trend Expert at WeThrift as being “everywhere this summer”. “We first spotted the trend taking heavy influence over the Valentino Pink PP Collection, followed by Margot Robbie channelling Barbie in her latest movie with Ryan Gosling,” he says. “Now the style is making its way into the wardrobes of a-list celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Megan Fox, Lizzo, Hailey Bieber and more.”
While we’re not too sure about dressing head-to-toe fluorescent pink, there’s no denying how a flash of Barbie hues can influence our mood: be it a statement blazer, a killer heel or a bold and bright blouse. Shop our edit of perfectly pink pieces below.
