You likely have an oversized shirt hanging in your wardrobe right now: this summer is the season to wear it on repeat, or invest in a new one (or two). Few items of clothing are more versatile. Designers have elevated the oversized shirt with new shapes, fabrics and bright shades. Some have had a feminine update, reimagined in summery shades of pink and orange. Prints on silks have been artfully drawn and digitally printed. My Best in Show was Valentino’s joyful, shocking pink oversized silk taffeta shirt (pictured above). Designer Pierpaolo Piccioli’s oversized white lace, bib-front shirt was pretty amazing too. Going one step further, Michael Kors conjured an oversized shirtdress. Add white jeans and a plaited leather belt and you’ll be bang up to date. Rule of thumb? Balance a big shirt with a slimmer-fitting bottom half. Big shirts are ideal paired with slim black leggings (a spring must) or half-tucked into high-waisted trousers or teamed with shorts for those who dare. While all shirts are oversized, shapes differ. It’s all about finding the shape most flattering to you. A tapered shape (loose at the shoulders and bust, slimmer at the hips) works for petite women. Longer, leaner versions layered over floor-skimming trousers look great on a taller person (this is one of the strongest looks of the season, by the way).
