Like it or loathe it, leggings reign supreme this autumn. Los Angeles-based designer Anine Bing works a high-low mix; pairing stirrup leggings with kitten heels and a boxy blazer. While French-English fashion influencer Camille Charièrre never seems to be without some iteration of a leggings-and-Breton-top combo.
How do they make it look so high end? It’s all about the leggings you choose, naturally. Look for fabrics that are both structured and breathable (a cotton-gabardine mix is a favourite), a high waist helps you feel supported and they must hug the ankle, just-so.
Then, it’s all about the add-ons. A luxurious handbag or a statement flat is needed here to give your look a premium feel. Keep the rest of your outfit classic and neutral; rely on a fail-safe trench, a dark-coloured blazer: forego patterns or prints for the most part, with the exception of a classic stripe.
Switch up a knit for a mannish shirt teamed with loafers and a blazer, when it feels right (as favoured by Style Editor of THE GLOSS Aislinn Coffey who swears by the fabrication of Joseph leggings, Wolford’s Scuba leggings and the Spanx perfect pant). “Always remember to size up on top,” Coffey reminds, “It will balance out the skinny leg.”
