How To Create A Chic Christmas Tablescape

Events specialist Tara O’Connor shares her top tips to create the ultimate festive tablescape …

“Preparation is everything. I set my table a day or two before I entertain to ensure everything is in place and to reduce stress on the day. I always say you should treat your tablescape like upcycling an outfit. Look to what you have at home before you go out and buy something new. Try to be sustainable and reuse what’s already in your cupboards then style them differently with accessories and florals.

I start by selecting a few key colours to define the table setting. Whether you prefer a monochromatic look or a harmonious palette of two or three colours, this will create a cohesive base. Begin with a tablecloth or runner then build up with placemats and charger plates. Add height with tapered candles and create warmth with tealights in votives. Candles should be in odd numbers of each style.

This year, it’s all about ribbons and bows. Velvet ribbons are perfect for tying around napkins, candlesticks or even as decorative touches on chairs. The more bows, the better! Always keep ribbon from gifts and reuse them to adorn candlesticks, napkins or vases.

I like to personalise my table with place names and menus. I also use a sprig of foliage or seasonal fruit like pomegranates as place markers. I use a mix of foliage and floral arrangements for centrepieces. I don’t like anything too tall that will prevent conversation across the table and overly scented flowers that detract from the meal. I greet guests with a glass of bubbles and serve nibbles, aiming to sit down for dinner within an hour. A hydration station is key!”
