Hello/Goodbye To These 6 Cafés Around Ireland

As we bid farewell to the beloved Søren & Son in Dublin, we welcome new cafés to the scene …

Goodbye: Søren & Son, Dean Street

Voted one of THE GLOSS Best Shops in 2023, this speciality café in The Liberties closed in June after five years in business. Founders Soren Stiller and Danile Horbat thanked their team and customers, with some commenting; “It’s a tough environment for small businesses and I can only imagine how difficult this decision must have been” and “Awful loss to Dublin 8. Lovely staff and even better coffee. You will be missed”. We’re sorry to see them go.

Hello: Myra, Francis Street

Founded by Ellie Daly, Myra comes to The Liberties, serving organic specialty Imbibe coffee and Mafia matcha, while pastries including the delicious Veneziana Pistachio – a sweet bread roll filled with a light pistachio cream – are delivered fresh every morning from Medialuna Croissanterie in the Docklands Innovation Park.

Hello: Shoe Lane Coffee, Burgh Quay

Opened by Jonathan Hughes and Jane Lunnon in 2016 as a small coffee bar near Tara Street Dart Station in the city centre, Burgh Quay marks their fourth location in Dublin, alongside Dun Laoghaire and Dalkey. Shoe Lane Coffee serves specialty coffee, batch-brews, V60 pour overs and ceremonial grade matcha – just add ice for warmer days. It also specialises in organic pastries, cakes, healthy treats, sourdough toasties and artisan sausage rolls (with vegan options too). Expect the usual Shoe Lane-style interior featuring vintage timber and steel trimmings, with a beautiful redbrick facade.

Hello: Elle’s Kimmage, Kimmage Road West

What was originally Ian’s Kitchen is now Elle’s Kimmage, named after the husband and wife duo behind Cluck Chicken, Ian and Ellie. This popular spot serves iced coffee and matcha in cans, green juices and an array of acai bowls from the coffee hatch. Those with a sweet tooth won’t want to miss the Biscoff hazelnut overnight oats or latte, cinnamon roll latte or, on the other end of the spectrum, protein lattes. The kitchen also serves brunch, including their famous lemon merinque pancakes, Cluck-fried chicken caesar sandwich or an avocado croast – a multiseed croissant with guacamole, poached eggs, rocket and parmesan.

Hello: My Little Flower, Market Street, Galway

This beloved coffee shop has opened a second location after its first in Oughterard, which has been a regular haunt for locals and road trippers since 2022. With a Scandi-style interior designed by Sarah Carty’s Anekdote, enjoy Colombian espresso, Pandan matcha with house-made syrup and an array of treats like cacao sourdough loaf.

Coming soon: LUNA Coffee and Wine, Cork

Founded by brother and sister team Killian and Emily Treacy on Brewery Lane in Killarney in 2022, LUNA’s second spot is coming to Cork this summer. They’ll undoubtedly serve a similar menu of West Cork coffee and matcha, artisan sandwiches and natural wine. Let’s hope they add their Aperol and elderflower cocktails, plus mango and strawberry brioche buns, as they’re particularly delicious.
