Plus three MUST-HAVES For Better Hair Days …
Healthy hair starts with a cared-for scalp. And now we can get hold of effective, affordable hair care – with less waste. The Aveeno® Scalp Soothing Haircare range, all under €10, has a new look, with more environmentally-friendly packaging, including a recyclable bottle and cap, and bottles made from 50 per cent post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic. And you’re still getting the same oat-powered formulas, designed to take the best care of both your hair and your scalp. “Now you don’t have to choose between caring for your hair condition – whether it’s dry, or oily, or coloured – or your scalp. You can look after both at the same time,” says Rebecca Bennett, skin expert at Aveeno® for 30 years.
SCALP CARE: WHAT’S THE STORY?
Aveeno® haircare is skin deep. With more than 70 years of skincare expertise, the experts at Aveeno® understand that a healthy scalp is the foundation of beautiful hair. “People believe the skin on their scalp is somehow different from the skin on their face and body,” says Bennett. “But it’s all the same skin. So we need to look after our scalps as much as we look after our faces. For example, it’s likely if your skin is oily or sensitive on your face and body, the same will be happening on your scalp, too.
“There can be other issues around the skin on the scalp. It’s a specialised area: it’s dark, covered by hair, and warmer, as it holds the heat of the hair. If you’re prone to oily skin, oil can get trapped next to the scalp. And with dry or sensitive skin, if cells can’t shed away invisibly they can get trapped; you might think you have a scalp condition such as dandruff, when really you just have dry or sensitive skin.”
Using too many products isn’t helping. Think what you put on your head each day. For example, dry shampoo: “It’s drying the moisture and oils out of your hair,” says Bennett. “Some clarifying shampoos can remove the moisture and essential lipids within the skin of the scalp. Hairspray can contain a lot of alcohol, which is drying, and even hair heat-protection products are not necessarily good for the scalp.”
HOLISTIC HAIRCARE
Look to ingredients found in skincare – such as oats, with their soothing, anti-irritating and protective capabilities – to help relieve scalp issues before they become problematic. “Colloidal oatmeal, the backbone of Aveeno, has both hydrating and protective benefits; it protects the skin barrier, helps to normalise the pH of the skin and gently cleanses,” explains Bennett.
Aveeno® Scalp-Soothing Haircare is a holistic routine, formulated with both hair and scalp in mind. And it’s clinically proven to relieve and soothe itchy, dry scalps – while being gentle enough to use daily, even for sensitive skin. Each is formulated with a unique combination of colloidal oats and botanical ingredients to help target specific hair needs, while caring for the scalp:
DRY HAIR: The Daily Moisture+ Oat Milk blend gently cleanses and helps to moisturise dry, damaged hair.
FINE HAIR: The Volumising+ Fresh Greens blend infused with cucumber, rosemary oil and peppermint to help boost fine, thin hair.
ALL HAIR TYPES: The Clarify & Shine+ Apple Cider Vinegar blend gently soothes the scalp, leaving hair hydrated, with a glossy shine.
COLOUR-TREATED HAIR: The Colour Protect+ Blackberry & Quinoa blend helps to prevent breakage, and leaves colour protected and vibrant.
FRIZZY & FLYAWAY HAIR: The Smoothing+ Rose Water & Chamomile blend gently cleanses and moisturises dry hair.
DAMAGED HAIR: The Damage Repair+ Almond Oil blend hydrates and smoothes damaged hair, leaving it soft and shiny.
Aveeno® haircare formulas are sulphate-free, respecting the scalp and hair’s natural pH levels by gently cleansing without stripping natural oils, and helping to maintain a healthy moisture balance for the scalp. The result? Healthy-looking hair, and a scalp that feels soothed.

3 small ways to better hair this spring
1 Upgrade your hairbrush. Improve microcirculation with daily brushing; try the Grow It Scalp Brush by Annutri (€11, www.annutri.com).
2 Balance your diet. Rebecca Bennett advises: “Just as the skin on our face and body can change according to the seasons, diet, exercise, etc, these all affect the scalp as well. Frequently the scalp can become oilier in the summer, for example; and stress exacerbates many conditions, including dandruff. A healthy diet full of greens is beneficial for your overall health, including hair and skin. Vitamin D is great to take all year round, particularly if you’re prone to dry skin or eczema.”
3 Ditch the elastics. Trade harsh elastics and plastic clips for kinder fasteners, such as silk scrunchies, which minimise friction for fragile hair. We love Slip Pure Silk Skinny Scrunchies (€35.75 at www.beautybay.com). And try Belle Hair’s set of two Mulberry silk scrunchies (€19.99 at www.bellehair.ie).
