“Kourtney is a big design enthusiast,” says British born, LA-based A-list designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard, who shares a special bond with the Kardashian family, having worked with Khloe, Kylie and Kris Jenner on their homes. When approaching this new project in Calabasas, Martyn incorporated Kourtney’s preference for neutral tones and her desire for a sophisticated, yet child-friendly, pared back style. The house was both a new beginning and a sanctuary. Kourtney’s previous home had a bold 1970s vibe which was replaced with a much more neutral palette.
“Kourtney wanted a very classically modern home, where she could collect modern masters and add to her existing w furniture and art, yet retain a sense of comfort. We added important works of art from Richard Serra, Damien Hirst, Doug Aitken, Roy Lichtenstein and Retna, to name a few, while integrating an edgy photography collection for contrast.”
There is a special kids zone on the lower level with a cinema and playroom. The master suite is located off the large outdoor terrace, while the kitchen is the hub of the home. Says Bullard, “There is a constant flow of people in Kourtney’s house and on the weekends she hosts many barbecues and pool parties. From Easter egg decorating, to gingerbread decorating parties, to her Halloween dinner parties, entertaining was paramount when designing this house.”
The outdoor space, like the interiors, needed to be a sanctuary that provided comfort for the family, while also being inviting to guests and showcase her sophisticated style. The outdoor space features gardens, a pool, an outdoor kitchen and basketball court.
“For the pool area, I selected Christian Liagre sofas and chairs, upholstered in “Perennials” fabric and complemented these with Restoration Hardware lounge chairs,” says Bullard. “As Kourtney often entertains, we introduced a custom fire table by James Hyatt Studio, which is perfect post pool party, barbecue, or for family get togethers.”
