“I have already lost touch with a few of the people I used to be,” wrote author Joan Didion once, as she pondered the passage of time.

On Jane Fonda’s 77th birthday, the actor and activist began building a shrine to her former self – school essays, mementos, books, in order to remind herself of the person she once was – the brave little girl she reconnected with via a fourth grade essay, for instance.

Significant birthdays have a funny effect on us – instead of dreading their approach, or letting them slip by without any fuss, we should celebrate them, use them as an opportunity to take stock, be grateful, or regretful, resolve to do more, less, or better … or just remember the brave little girls we used to be.
