Channelling the spirit of St Brigid’s Day, events for women, hosted by inspiring women, took precedence in the social whirl this week …
To mark St Brigid’s Day, a special Irish Film & Television Academy screening of Women Talking took place on Wednesday February 1 at The Irish Film Institute, Dublin. Directed by Sarah Polley and starring Jessie Buckley, Claire Foy, Rooney Mara and Frances McDormand, Women’s Talking has received two Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. Based on the 2018 novel by Miriam Toews, inspired by a true story, it tells how women in an isolated religious community grapple with reconciling their reality with their faith.
Guests included IFTA members along with Universal Pictures guests stylist Cathy O’Connor, TV presenters Blathnaid Ni Chofaigh and Anna Nolan, podcaster and presenter Louise McSharry and fashion designer Peter O’Brien. Also in attendance were Gillian Henderson, co-founder of Jill & Gill, fashion designer Aisling Kavanagh and presenter Jenny Buckley. Emma Kelly, founder of Elevate PR which recently celebrated 21 years in business, says, “This an important film, and it is rare to see the screen dominated by women. Jessie Buckley is outstanding in it. It is hard going at times but very thought provoking.” Women Talking will be in cinemas nationwide from Friday, February 10.
