Glossip: Celebrating 100 years of the Stella Cinema!

Celebrating 100 years of the Stella Cinema, around 200 guests attended the event which included many from the world of film and media …

Irish cinephiles have had much to celebrate recently. With no fewer than 14 nominations in the forthcoming 95th Academy Awards, nine of which are for The Banshees of Inisherin, its lead actors Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson popped up at a glamorous party to mark the centenary of Stella Cinema, Rathmines.

The duo recorded a special message for the event, as did directors Baz Luhrmann, (Elvis) Lenny Abrahamson (Normal People) and Damien Chazelle (Babylon). Quite a coup for the art deco cinema, currently ranked 16th in the world’s most beautiful cinemas, which officially opened on January 29, 1923 as a 1,283-seater picture house and ballroom.

Following a champagne reception in its chic cocktail bar, RTÉ Lyric FM presenter Aedín Gormley welcomed around 200 guests to the event which included many from the world of film and media. Director Lee Cronin (whose new film is Evil Dead), radio presenters Matt Cooper, Marty Whelan, stylist Clementine MacNeice, presenter Lorraine Keane and musician Peter Devlin were among those who enjoyed a special documentary about the Stella made by a trio of young film makers: Ronan Burke, Eoin Collins and Conor Simpson. The documentary included contributions from local community members and the team who operate the cinema today including theatre director Karl Geraghty.

In the 1970s Stella functioned not only as a cinema but also as a venue for live music playing host to the Boomtown Rats and Elvis Costello before declining as the rise of multiplexes grew. The cinema closed in 2004. Acquired by the Press Up Hospitality Group, it reopened in 2017 having been restored to its original splendour with detailed mosaic tiling, ceiling architraves and mouldings key features. The original façade was brought back, based on an illustrated 1920s sketch. A new limited-edition print by local artist Fintan Wall captures the beauty and grandeur of the cinema.

Before supper, guests were also treated to a short Buster Keaton film Cops accompanied by a live score by Matthew Nolan – a preview of some of the events planned for the birthday celebrations. Each event will showcase a feature-length silent era film accompanied by a live score performed and composed by Nolan. This series begins on Wednesday, March 8 with The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. To find out more about the programme visit www.stellacinemas.ie. PMcC.

She is the queen of no makeup makeup and even manages to make a smokey eye look subtle. When everyone else was going for heavy contour and laminated eyebrows, she continued to promote enhancing your natural features with simple tricks and smart product placement. If you have seen any of her videos, you will notice how little product she actually uses. Even Victoria Beckham commented how surprised she was when she went to remove her makeup after a shoot with Lisa on how little product was applied.
