Glossip: A Look Inside Dior’s Haute Couture Show in Paris

The Rodin Museum, Paris was the setting for Dior’s Spring Summer Haute Couture show where rockstars mingled with royalty, and actresses posed alongside supermodels …

Dior’s Creative Director, Maria Grazia Chiuri has amassed a loyal following of friends and ambassadors of the house who flocked to the Rodin Museum on Monday for the Spring Summer haute couture show.

Guests included actresses Anya Taylor-Joy, Felicity Jones, Juliette Binoche, Glenn Close and Elizabeth Debicki, supermodels Carla Bruni-Sarkozy and Natalia Vodianova (now married to LVMH heir Antoine Arnault) and Monegasque royalty, Beatrice Borromeo.

The show was a talking point for several reasons. The scenography was carefully conceived by Italian artist Isabella Ducrot and named “Big Aura”. It was a collection of 23 oversized dresses, some five metres high, which reflected “the uniqueness and essence of haute couture”.

Maria Grazia Chiuri (now brunette) decided to trace the meaning of aura through Dior’s Haute Couture history, specifically drawing inspiration from La Cigale dress, designed in 1952, which was known for its expansive skirt and intricate layers. She reimagined La Cigale in a series of contemporary looks. The collection also paid tribute to Mr Dior’s love of moiré fabric used in shades that emphasised the iridescence of the fabric: gold, white, navy, burgundy and green.

The show was defined by its architectural elegance and simplicity and featured coats with imposing collars, wide skirts revealing exaggerated cut-outs, overlapping layers, pants and jackets. We loved the caped trench coats, bar jackets and feather capes as well as the pretty polka dot gown, the finale of the show.

Off the catwalk, the chief talking point was Rihanna’s post-pregnancy comeback after welcoming second son, Riot. She’s been a Dior girl for a long time, and she put her trademark “bad girl” spin on this collection, wearing a LBD with a black brocade puffer jacket cinched in at the waist, accessorised with an oversized black cap, black leather gloves and diamonds. After the show, Rihanna bumped into actresses Glenn Close and Natalie Portman who were caught on social media “fangirling” each other.
